2017 Mercedes-Benz SLC Replaces SLK with Turbo Power

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is getting a new name to go along with its new engines.

The German automaker has revealed the new roadster, which will be offered in the U.S. as the SLC300 and SLC43. The SLC300 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, while the SLC43 will be a Mercedes-AMG model packing a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 churning 367 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Both models will come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

As part of the model’s facelift, Mercedes sharpened the SLC’s sporty look by giving it a new front end that boasts a steeply raked radiator grille that elongates the appearance of the arrow-shaped hood. All SLC models will come standard with a diamond radiator grille.

A new feature for the SLC is standard Active Brake Assist, known as Collision Prevention Assist Plus on other models. In addition to radar-based proximity warning and braking assistance by Adaptive Brake Assist, the system will also carry out autonomous braking to reduce the possibility of rear-end collisions.

On the inside, the SLC gets a 4.5-inch color TFT display that is incorporated between the two dials as standard. In conjunction with Audio 20, owners get a seven-inch infotainment rather than the standard 5.8-inch unit.

'In 1996, Mercedes-Benz redefined the roadster with its innovative vario-roof, and combined open-air driving pleasure with uncompromised comfort in poor weather,' said Ola Källenius, member of the board of management of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Cars sales & marketing. 'The renamed compact roadster remains an ideal combination of passion and rational common sense, appealing to both the heart and the mind.'

Expect pricing for the Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class lineup to be announced closer to its launch early next year.
