2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe Review

Quote:
The GLE Coupe is a completely new entry into Mercedes-Benzí rapidly expanding SUV lineup, but itíll have you thinking 'Donít I know you from somewhere?'

A four-door coupe version of the new GLE-Class (formerly the M-Class), it comes to market with impressive new powertrains and is all wrapped up in a package thatís eerily familiar. Thatís because one look across the street at BMWís offerings and youíll perform a double-take upon glancing at the X6.

Both the X6 and GLE-Class Coupe feature a fashion-forward design that compromises rearward visibility but delivers a modern coupe-like profile.

While the X6 has been on sale since 2009 and has been without a direct rival since then, the Benz does have an advantage by virtue of being a brand new vehicle, arriving with advanced technologies, potent powerplants and a ton of customizable features.

Here we go again, another poor design. It probably seats 4 nicely, but at 5,000 lbs it should! Visibility is compromised, everywhere. Forward is hurt by the extra high hood so the driver has no idea where the hood ends and where the tricycle is parked. The rear window is super small and doesn't let you look back, even if you turn your head 180 degrees. The side windows are small, requiring radar detectors to signal when other vehicles are next to you. The rear headrests probably don't fold down, creating more visibility issues.

Its nice to have big wheels, but try hitting a few of our ever growing potholes with the small bias tires that are now run flats. The road clearance is enough to go down farmer Jones tractor trail, but doesn't that eat up mpg when on paved roads? And then no mud guards for the extra wide tires?

Somewhat disillusioned...
This is a great driver's car, except for the comand center and lack of gauges.
The little gremlins come and go at will.

Looks like an offspring of BMW X6 and Ford Taurus (rear looks like Ford Taurus')

I don't think this is going to fly.

Agree about the poor design. Seems nothing new with the design of X6

The Mazda RX-8 was classified as a sports car by the industry and it had 4 doors.

Yeah - some of the industry categorized the RX-8 and the Miata as a sports car too. But they were wrong, and more knowledgeable people in the industry pointed it out

Hi all,

These aerial videos of the GLE and GLE Coupe were shot with a drone during the international press testdrive of these cars in Austria.

Thanks for your comments
