2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Will Drive Itself

Mercedes-Benz is hard at work on its next-generation of adaptive cruise control, a system that should take them one step closer to autonomous driving.

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Will Drive Itself

This feature is expected to be available around March 2016 when the companyís new E-Class goes on sale. This should be a step beyond the already impressive Distronic Plus system offered in their flagship S-Class model.

With cameras and a battery of other sensors this latest cruise-control technology can steer the vehicle, navigate corners and can even regulate speed based on street signs. Certain situations can confuse the technology, such as shadows cast by trees or road construction.

If the driving situation becomes too challenging, such as a turn thatís overly sharp, the driver has to intervene, though the system will give them ample warning. Mercedesí latest cruise control can operate at speeds up to 80 miles an hour.

Beyond all of this the system can spot pedestrians. If it detects a person in its path it can completely stop the vehicle if itís traveling at less than 40 miles an hour.

The day I have to surrender the pleasure of driving to the machines will be a good day to hit a bridge abutment at 100 mph!

Agree with Alex, I hate this stuff. I love cars; I have zero interest in computers-on-wheels.

My new 2014 - yes new used demo Star Certified 2600 km on the odometer - SLK350 has Distronic Cruise Control.
It has taken a while to adjust to it but I would dearly love to disable it but I haven't found a way as yet.
It is clearly part of the future controls system in this insanity.
