2014 S-Class is $2,000 Cheaper than Last year's model

Quote:
Mercedes-Benz has announced pricing on the 2014 S-Class with the S550 starting from $93,825 including a $925 destination charge.

That actually means the new 2014 S-Class is priced $2,100 lower than the outgoing 2013 model year and adds a ton of new standard equipment to the luxury flagship sedan including 20 more horsepower, rearview camera, Panaroma sunroof, all-LED lighting, keyless start and Magic Vision Control.

Those wanting 4MATIC all-wheel drive will have to pay $3,000 more. 4MATIC however will be standard on the S63 AMG model, which will launch later this year in November and will be priced from $140,425. The outgoing 2013 S63 AMG started at $500 more, but all-wheel drive was not standard.

Can you hear me now?

Mercedes-Benz received much criticism in 1999 when it launched its new S-Class. At the time money out of Stuttgart was heading to Auburn Hills to fund development for Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep models. Some would say that costs were cut in "places nobody would notice". If you owned one, nothing could be further from the truth. Reliability proved poor. Fit and finish was not up to standards. Long-term durability didn't hold up. More importantly, the car the was the real standard of luxury cars slipped and fell. In 2006, corrections were made. The outgoing S-Class was decidedly improved, except for a few launch year bugs. It had earned back respect from harsh critics, and owners. 2013 could be the real return of the king. The new cars are back to building to a standard, not a price. The styling is correctly conservative but modern. The technology will raise all bars for the industry. The interior design will spawn copycats. The attitude and presence has returned. Other cars will stand-up out of respect when it drives into the parking at Chateau Elan. It speaks with a confident and commanding voice. The king has returned! Can you hear me now?

Still waiting for all models to come standard with 4matic. Any car with over 400hp needs AWD.

Improvement is still needed

I have looked at a 2014 S-Class side by side with a 2014 E550 4Matic. The E550 had smaller and more consistent door gaps. I opened and closed the driver's side front door on the S-class. It had a surprisingly non-luxury-car sound. The interior, however, was stunning--classy, sober, and consistent in style. These are early days on the production line and I expect fit and finish to continue improving. The showroom cost with installed accessories exceeded 122,000 dollars.

I believe, without having driven the car, that it is a very good car despite the specific issues I noted. It may well become a great car when it receives the nine-speed automatic and the forthcoming new-generation V8 engine.
