2012 Mercedes B-Class Teased, Details Released

Mercedes has just released several teaser images of the 2012 B-Class which is set to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. Along with the photos, MB has also released extensive specifications on the new car, which will boast new engines, a more dynamic shape and improved passenger and cargo room, among other things.

When it comes to under the hood, four 4-cylinder powerplants will be available with a 122-hp 1.6-liter B180 model and a 156-hp B200 model. As for diesel engines, a 1.8-liter B180 CDI will make 109-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while a B200 CDI makes 136-hp and 221 lb-ft. Of note, Mercedes says the new 4-cylinder engines can mounted either transversely or longitudinally, suggesting rear-wheel drive versions are possible. A 6-speed manual will come standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission optional!

Much like the current B-Class, the new model makes used of a sandwhich floor, with open space below the passenger compartment that will be used for a future “alternative drive” (read electric) version. And on that green note, after launch, Mercedes will introduce an ECO Technology package with new aerodynamics to achieve a 0.24 coefficient of drag. That’s the same as in the E-Class coupe, and better even than the Toyota Prius.

The vehicle’s shape will change quite dramatically, taking inspiration from the A-Class concept first shown at the New York Auto Show. Compared to the current B-Class the new 2012 model has a roof height that is roughly 2-inches lower, while the seat height has been lowered roughly 3.5-inches so drivers will feel less like they’re behind the wheel of a bus.

Inside, look for improved functionality with rear seats than can be moved forward or back by as much as 5.5-inches,

As for safety, Mercedes will continue to push ahead with its plans of being a safety leader, adding a radar-based collision warning system (Collision Prevention Assist) standard. Other safety highlights include adaptive headlights, blind spot warning and Lane Keeping Assist, Attention Assist, a Hill Hold function, back-up camera and more.

Look for Mercedes to reveal the design of the new B-Class ahead of its Frankfurt debut in September.
