New York 2011: 2012 Mercedes E63 AMG Gets Bi-turbo V8 With Nearly 600 Lb-Ft of Torque
Debuting today at the New York Auto Show, Mercedes officially revealed the 2012 E63 AMG. Looking nearly identical to the current E63 this mid-cycle refresh has one important change – the engine. Gone is the 6.2-liter engine from which the car derives its name, and in its place is a new bi-turbo 5.5-liter V8 good for 518-hp.
Full torque of 516 lb-ft is a tremendous improvement over the current naturally aspirated V8, while an AMG Performance Package adds more thrust for a total of 550-hp and… wait for it… 590 lb-ft of torque. The sprint to 60 elapses in just 4.4 seconds for the regular model and 4.3 seconds wit the AMG package.
Also of note this model uses 22 percent less fuel than the current mill – thanks in part to a start/stop system and other enhanced fuel saving features, including a new electric power steering system.
The 2012 E63 AMG will go on sale this fall.
