Mercedes-Benz Conducting Market Research For B-Class Compact

Mercedes-Benz is conducting customer clinics to determine whether their B-Class compact car is suitable for sales in the U.S. market. The B-Class is currently sold in Canada, where its five-door quasi-hatchback bodystyle is extremely popular, but small cars have traditionally struggled in the United States.

If the B-Class does come to America, it won't make it until the new B-Class is released in 2012. Mercedes is looking to determine whether the hatchback, or another configuration like a sedan, coupe or crossover is most appropriate. American Mercedes dealers have protested the B-Class' inclusion into the lineup, saying the vehicle does not fit into the brand's luxury image.

I would not buy a B class, but I think it will do well in US as a replacement for the mid size SUV's!

I believe a hatchback for the US market might dilute the brand in the eyes of many current customers and dealers, but I feel a coupe or sedan based on the B-Class (F800 style) would be welcomed. Those cars could still carry the "B" designation since it is relatively unknown on our shores. I believe they would be bought up by current owners as second "city cars", first cars for their young drivers, and by new comers to the brand who want to move up from Japanese, Korean and American brands. It would be a smart move and expand the Mercedes-Benz marque to a new demographic just as the 190E and C-Class did.
For the record, I think the F800 design language should be carried through into the next C-Class... they would sell like ice cubes in Death Valley. The car would also do well in emerging markets like China and Korea with it's familiar and friendly styling.
