Report: Next Generation S-Class Models to be Hybrid-Only, Except for AMGs

The next generation S-Class models will be offered exclusively as hybrids in North America, according to a report by Autoblog. Exempt, however, will be the high-performance AMG models. Mercedes will deliver the new model in 2012.

Currently Mercedes offers three non-AMG models, including two gasoline models – the 382-hp 5.5-liter V8-powered S550 and the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V12-powered S600. There's also the brand's first hybrid, the S400 (reviewed here) with a lithium-ion battery, 3.5-liter V6 and a rating of 26 mpg on the highway. Apparently, the popularity of that model is part of the reason behind the decision at Mercedes.

It's not clear if Mercedes will offer just one hybrid S-Class or perhaps two different options, one with more power and lower fuel economy and one with less power and increased fuel economy.

Hybrid cars are supposedly good for the environment by producing less smog by using less fuel. If Mercedes Benz really wants to hype itself into a truly greener planet, they should also offer to buy back all the old diesel Mercedes that are still on the roads, damaging the environment around the world.

I read about this over at Will the next generation Mercedes S-Class be exclusively hybrid ?. World cars news. Mercedes auto news . I think that the best decision would be a compromise. The lower and middle end versions to be made hybrid exclusively but for those looking for a little fun, keep the AMG version on gasoline. This would satisfy the needs of everyone.
