Report: Street Legal Mercedes CLK GTR Cars to be Auctioned Off in London
For those with the means, RM Auctions is offering the chance to own not one, but two Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR street cars. Essentially road legal versions of the FIA GT1 race cars, just 25 of these incredible exotics were built to meet FIA regulations, which clearly state that any race car must be based on a production model street car.
As a result, these street cars are actually based on the race cars, and not the other way around. They boast 612-hp 6.9-liter V12 engines, six-seed sequential transmissions with paddle shifters and carbon fiber brakes.
The CLK GTR race cars competed in the FIA GT1 class in 1997 and 1998, taking the championship in their first year.
As mentioned, just 25 of these cars exist with only five of the roadster models ever made.
Both cars will hit the auction block on October 28th at RM Auction’s Automobiles of London sale.
I have seen these in action during the 1998 FIA season at Laguna Seca in Monterey California and I must say that these were the quietest motorcars on the track! They almost seemed to whistle and whine (gear noise no doubt) by with their very large silencers. The gearchanges made more noise as the gearboxes dealt with the massive torque. They won for the GT1 class 1st and second with Bernd Schneider and Klaus Ludwig respectively. Lots of fun to watch but still not my favorite MBZ racer. that would go to the Sauber C9 Le Mans (groupe C) racers.

Ditto on the C9 as a favorite I really wonder what these GTR's will bring at auction, because I've seen a couple of them on Classicdriver.com/uk for about a year now. Any guesses?
A couple more shots of a GTR. These were taken at an exotic supercar show in St. Petersburg, FL. I was just told recently that a Dr. here in Sarasota owns one, so this is probably it. BTW, the Dr. who told me about it owns dozen really nice cars; Jaguar XJ 220, Ferrari Maranello, Masserati Bora, Dodge Viper, Saleen Mustang convertible, '88 BMW M5, and a few others. He keeps most of them at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum.
