Seems to me that MB will have to make the new CLK a retractable in order to keep up with the Joneses. Don't know if that's in the works or not.

Retractable hardtops are difficult in 4 seater configurations. Styling is often awkward, bulky, poorly proportioned/butt heavy and all that stuff makes the car overweight and the trunk small.

Mercedes-Benzes worldwide is different than what's expected of US Mercedes-Benzes. Where we see it as a luxury brand, worldwide, Mercedes-Benz encompasses everything from the luxury segment, the trucking segment, they're like what GM is to us. MB makes cars, trucks, buses, they even have cars smaller than the CLC, A and B classes. It's not sad when you think about that way, it's just they way they make their money. Of course, it wouldn't work here where we expect every MB to be fully loaded and have a V8.

New C-classes in US are doing very well with mid-sized V6's, but nothing smaller.

Hatchbacks in general at any price point are a tough sell in the US.

Notice how MB was careful to keep distance from Smart cars in the US market.

I hear you. They mainly use C classes as Taxis over in germany. I used to have a C230 K coupe. I thought it was the best thing in the world until I got a reality check. A brand new Mercedes should be something that you work hard for to finally achieve it. When you have teenagers easily buying the coupe here in the U.S. it kinda demeans the good name. But then again it's still a C and not an SL. IMO you just can't beat the V8 rumble of a Mercedes!

You're right, but everyone's doing it... Volvo, VW, BMW. FWIW, I think that BMW got it closest to right. So far.

Never saw one when I was there couple summers ago.

The E-class is the standard taxi, but the B-class is coming on strong since it has a larger interior than an E-class. C-class would be pretty small for a taxi.
