It is ironic that you brought up Lotus. After I quit working at American Honda In Schaumberg, IL I was picking up odd jobs to fill in the gaps and I ended up at the Haas location in Indy before he moved everything to Kannapolis, NC.
Got to meet Carl a few times and he was very warm to me and my team there. He got us tickets to any event we wanted and always with passes to his CART team VIP areas at the tracks. I was only there for 22 months.
Ironically he set me up with David Hobbs who opened a Honda car franchise just a mile from a home we bought in Wisconsin and were moving into. It was a great gig and David is an absolute hoot and great man to work for.
I keep up with David actively and there are some serious hints that Carl is interested in Lotus if Lotus will sell. Carl knows he can not be outside of the UK F1 teams' area and expect to have quick upgrades. He also knows that the supply line for things like brake parts, transmission designs and many other things are much easier to obtain if he locates his team headquarters in the UK.
Now with MB supplying engines to Lotus starting next season the Lotus team looks a lot more appealing.
I honestly do not know anything more at this point, but David does not mind chatting about it. Later this year is going to be a 25th anniversary bash for the dealership and a lot of interesting people will be there like Vic Elford, Sam Posey and some of the other NBC sports commentators.
Who knows, maybe by then Carl Haas will have a deal in hand for 2015, but he needs something soon and it would be best to get a team that is already laying out 2015 chassis plans. It is going to very interesting to follow the saga.
