Your thoughts on racing a C280.

Hello all.
I have a '97 C280 Sport now with about 300K miles and will be retiring it from daily driver status soon. Although it isn't worth much on the used market and needs lots of work, it still runs great and I'm sure it would be a blast out on the track.

BIR is just a few hours away and I plan to take it there and spend a day in their driving school. I don't know much about racing but am looking into the SCCA. I'm wondering if others here have any experience with cars like this on the track. I don't need to be competitive but instead just want to have some fun without always having to worry about the trooper waiting around the next turn.

Without some racing basics, neophytes will likely just be a danger to others and themselves.
The Southern states have some pretty good performance driving schools.
Something along these lines might be a good place to start.

The track is the best place to drive fast for sure! That having been said, taking a car with 300,000 miles on it will be a challenge.

You will need to make your car safe and able to pass tech and complete a days worth of running without embarrassing yourself or being in the way of others. To do this you will most likely have to spend some serious bucks on upgrading the brakes and suspension. In addition, you'll need some decent tires. If you are burning any oil they will not let you on the track.

SCCA is a great organization, but for your needs you may want to consider NASA They are not quite as bureaucratic as SCCA. Might be a better fit with what you want to do...more of a "run whatcha brung" sort of group. SCCA is going to require that your car has been professionally race prepped.

Anyway good luck and keep us posted!
