Red Bull 'trust' Vettel over late-race fastest lap bids

Published: 31/10/11, 06:25PM
Christian Horner revealed that Red Bull did all they could to try and prevent Sebastian Vettel chasing the fastest lap time in the closing stages in India after the German again produced one of his trademark last-lap sprints, although says the squad retain “complete faith” that the world champion isn’t taking undue risks.

For the second successive race Vettel rounded off a dominant victory by setting a new fastest lap time on the very last lap, despite having already beaten team-mate Mark Webber’s then benchmark on the previous tour and not being under serious threat from Jenson Button behind.

It was the 24-year-old’s ninth career fastest lap and his Red Bull team principal said that despite not at that stage having the RB7’s full potential at his disposal, Vettel just wanted to complete the perfect hat-trick.

“Well despite the fact that we’d wound the engine all the way back, we’d turned down everything as much as we could, we’d turned the KERS off and he’s still setting purple sectors!” Horner said.

“I think he just wanted to ensure he had the perfect weekend: pole position, race win and fastest lap.

“I think that was one of his best drives of the year to be honest, he was absolutely faultless today and delivered an excellent performance.”

After setting a last-gasp fastest lap in Korea that was a whopping 0.8s faster than the previous benchmark, Horner says Vettel had promised him he wouldn’t try something similar in India.

However, while it may increase the nerves on the Red Bull pit wall, Horner says the team have ultimate faith that the two-time title winner knows what he’s doing.

“We spoke about it after the last race and he said ‘yeah, I’m sorry, it won’t happen again’ and two weeks later here we are!” Horner said.

“He’s a sensible boy. At the end of the day we have complete trust in him. I’m sure that he still had a margin in there.

“The most important thing for him is to win the race and he knows there’s no points for fastest lap.

“He likes that little statistic to complete a perfect weekend.”

Although he has claimed 11th race wins so far this year, Vettel’s margin of victory has only twice been more than 10s with the German’s regularly having steadily managed a gap back to his nearest rival built up in the first few laps.

Horner says the champion’s ability to pace himself and look after his tyres has been a key to his success this season.

“What he’s been fantastic at doing this year, because it’s been a bit of a voyage of discovery with these tyres, just managing the gap and managing the pace to the car behind,” the RBR chief said.

“What we were very keen to do today was establish a gap and then to ensure that we were always on slightly fresher tyres.

“So we would concede the undercut to McLaren by them pitting first and of course they would eat into that gap on the out-lap, but of course our tyres were always that one lap fresher.

“We felt we had enough in hand to manage that.”
