Haug: That was vintage Schumacher

Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug feels Michael Schumacher's performance in Canada proved that he is still able to deliver the goods when he is given the right car.

The seven-time World Champion's sluggish start to the 2011 campaign prompted speculation that he could throw the towel in before his contract with Mercedes GP expires at the end of 2012.

Schumacher though hit back at the Canadian Grand Prix with probably his best display since he came out of retirement. He found himself in second place in the latter stages of the race, but had to settle for fourth place as DRS made him a sitting duck for Jenson Button and Mark Webber.

Haug feels it was vintage Schumacher in Montreal.

"This is what happens in sport - you can turns thing around quickly," Haug told Autosport.

"Ultimately you need results, and the one here was a very respectable one. We did it with Ralf [Schumacher] in DTM too - where he got criticism but now he is delivering good results.

"Our team is composed, it stays together and everyone is helping each other. This was Michael at his best. It shows that he can do it, and that if we give him the right car he will deliver."

I was in Melbourne FL for work this past weekend and even though I had the race recorded, the break was too long and I missed the entire race after the restart! I read it was a great race, I'm curious if any of the people from around here were at the race in Montreal?

Was fortunate enough to be there Sunday. (or maybe unfortunate considering the 2 hour downpour those of us who stayed had to sit through). Schumie's display was nothing short of awesome. He was on inters before everyone else and was easily passing once the race restarted. He was second to get on slicks following Weber and continued to carve his way to the front. During Quali 3 he opted to run only two laps on his new supersoft tires and thus had a nearly new set once the slicks were put back on after the rain was over. The crowd was nearly 100% behind him, which made every lap even more exciting. Only the diehards were still in the stands after all the rain so it was kind of a private race for the true fans. On the last restart, Schumie was in second place behind Vettel and right up his ass heading for the green lights. The Mercedes Benz Petronas GP car was no match for Vettel's Red Bull as he simply pulled away. There was nothing Schumie could do as Weber and then Button (who were in third and fourth respectively) used DRS to pass Michael. I left the track Sunday with two impressions:
- similar to Haug, I believe Michael has all the skill he needs and will do well if the team gives him a car that is up to the challenge
- Vettel clearly sandbags the Red Bull. He qualified only 0.100 ahead of Alonso yet drove away from everyone on the start and every restart. Nothing against him but the challenge of beating the Red Bull is more significant than it even appears.

My question is why doesn't Webber come close to Vettel since they drive the same car?

Webber's car isn't any slower for sure. When he was "on it" there was no one other than Vettel who was faster. While Schumie was carving his way through the field Webber was doing the same thing until he ultimately caught Schumie after the restart. Vettel is the class of the field in terms of driving skill these days and I don't think Webber is as good. I like Webber; he's good for the sport, like Coulthard was, but he isn't going to win a championship as long as Vettel is around IMO.
