F1 - Suzuka Qualifying postponed to 10 AM Sunday

F1 : Qualifying concerns in Japan

09 October 2010 * 05:10

With drivers reporting undriveable conditions and the local radar predicting even heavier rain ahead, the FIA has reserved a 10am timeslot for Sunday morning qualifying at Suzuka.

"I really don't think there is going to be qualifying," said Sebastien Buemi's race engineer, just before Toro Rosso's Swiss driver entered the circuit and spun during Saturday morning practice.

Lotus' Mike Gascoyne confirmed that the weather forecast for qualifying is for even worse conditions than in practice, where the McLaren and Ferrari drivers were eventually grounded due to rivers of water causing aquaplaning.

"I cannot even drive on the straight," said Jaime Alguersuari.

Gascoyne told the BBC: "If it's like this, they'll have to look at postponing qualifying until tomorrow morning."

Suzuka qualifying was run on Sunday morning in 2004 in order to avoid the typhoon Ma-on.

Qualifying is currently scheduled to get underway at 14.00 local time, 06.00 BST.

Qualifying postponed until Sunday at Suzuka

FIA Medical car. Formula One World Championship, Rd 16, Japanese Grand Prix, Qualifying Day, Suzuka, Japan, Saturday, 9 October 2010 Charlie Whiting (GBR) FIA Delegate and Herbie Blash (GBR) FIA Delegate head for a reconnaissance lap of the track in the FIA Safety Car as qualifying is delayed due to the rain. Formula One World Championship, Rd 16, Japanese Grand Prix, Qualifying Day, Suzuka, Japan, Saturday, 9 October 2010

Qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix will now take place on Sunday morning after persistent heavy rain forced the session to be abandoned on Saturday afternoon.

Final practice had been a near washout in the morning, with only two drivers recording times, and with conditions worsening, the start of qualifying was delayed several times.

The safety car was sent out periodically to check the state of the track, but with weather forecasts showing no sign of the rain easing - and with the afternoon light rapidly fading - stewards finally decided to call it a day at 15.18 local time.

Sunday's qualifying session is expected to start at 10.00 hours local time, 01.00 hours GMT, but that has yet to be confirmed by the stewards. Further details to follow.

I watched a bit of the canceled wet event late Sat. My DVR didn't record anything.
Perhaps Speed will show it at the qualy time slot at 9PM (21:00) Los Angeles?

Perhaps Ecclestone & Cie shouldn't program the Malaysia, Singapore, China, Japan, & Korea events so close to the monsoon season.
