Barrichello accepts Schu's text apology

Michael Schumacher has apologised to Rubens Barrichello via a text message for the blocking move that almost put him in the wall in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Schumacher was heavily criticised by pundits, former drivers and Barrichello himself for his aggressive tactics against the Brazilian veteran four weeks ago in Budapest, which nearly resulted in his rival crashing into the concrete inside wall.

A day after the race the seven-time champion, who was handed a 10-place grid penalty for this weekend’s Belgian GP as punishment, issued what was viewed by many as a half-hearted apology on his website in which he admitted his move had been too hard and clarified he had not intended to put Barrichello in danger.

Barrichello revealed at Spa on Thursday that he had now received his own personal apology from his former Ferrari team-mate, adding that he had now moved on from the incident.

“I received a message from him today, an SMS [text message],” he told reporters.

“Somebody said to him that he was under the impression that I thought he pushed me into the wall and he said it wasn’t the case, so apologised for that.

“I just said ‘thank you, no problem’. Life goes on.”

And asked if he accepted Schumacher’s apology, Williams driver Barrichello added: “Yeah, absolutely. And I wished him a good weekend too.”

Later appearing in Thursday’s pre-event press conference at Spa, Schumacher said he would have no issues with speaking over the incident with Barrichello in person – explaining that he sent the text message as he wanted to congratulate his former stable-mate on reaching the 300th GP milestone this weekend while also clarifying his Hungary intentions.

“I’ve no problem to speak to Rubens, absolutely and indeed,” Schumacher said.

“There were two reasons I sent him a text. The main reason, or one of the main reasons was, it’s his 300th grand prix and we have quite a history together.

“So I thought it was appropriate to congratulate him and clarify the point [from Hungary] because he sort of felt I wanted to push him against the wall, and very clearly this was not my ambition.

“I wanted to race very tightly, but without any wall contact. So to clarify this point, if he felt this was the case I was sorry for that.”
