choosing an engine for a 190e SOS!

I am in the process of choosing a track (and some street) car. I have done a great deal of research on choosing an engine for a 190e with no luck. From what i gathered the w201 would be the best for a track car.(please correct me if im wrong or there is an easier way to go about this) if the 190e is not the best for this what chassis would be?

I am looking into doing an engine swap to compete with my friends 3.2 M3. what engine would be best? m102, m103, or the m104? would i be better off finding a 190e with a 2.6-12 leave it and modify the engine in some way? i am not very familiar with finding the most efficient way of building power the mercedes cars so any help would be greatly appreciated! (I used to be a chevy guy im sorry)

I believe you would find it very hard to beat a Bimmer M3 with a 190 Benz...but I might be wrong.. A had ride in Germany many years ago in a factory SLC 5.0 liter race car...that might be the route to go....

What Calgary said. M3's were very dominant back in those days. Until the EVO's came out.

There is one rule...there are no rules!

Recipe for a BMW M3 beater using a W201:
a. Get a M104 engine (the M103 and M104 share the same block)
b. search on the R129 subforum of BW. there's a Bangkok based SL with a
500+ M104 turbocharged engine, follow the specs!

quite an expensive build. i really like to look of the car. anyone know anywhere i could get a cheap 500sl or somthing similar? can i get some craigslists posts of somthing i should be looking for?

i really liked the 190e because they are so cheap. an engine swap isnt worth doing in the 190e? i was excited for the engine rebuild. i have never pulled apart a mercedes engine before
