F1 rivals say Alonso best current driver

(GMM) Fernando Alonso's track rivals have voted him the best driver currently in formula one.

The finding was published by the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, who provided the anonymous questionnaire to each of the 24 race drivers.

Ayrton Senna was voted the best driver of all time by a large margin, with seven time world Michael Schumacher in second place.

The most aggressive driver is Lewis Hamilton, and the McLaren driver was also tipped by his rivals to fight for the 2010 title against Sebastian Vettel.

Monaco was voted as the most dangerous circuit.

As for the 'most beautiful woman' in the paddock, one driver voted for Nico Rosberg, whose Williams mechanics last year nicknamed him 'Britney' (Spears).

Most drivers, however, voted for the French reporter Marion Jolles.

NEWS JUST IN

Massa voted best mobile chicane.

He's obviously better than Alonso, because Fernando wouldn't be able to keep Vettel behind him in third place.

Alonso also wins the "whinger of the decade award" with Nigel Mansell a creditable second.

FA must have spent nearly two thirds of this afternoon's GP moaning that he couldn't get past his team-mate who was intermittently slower then quicker than him. WTF!

When was the racing rule introduced that the leader of a grand prix has to slow down and let his competitor overtake him?

Sorry Ferrari but once again you have scored an enormous PR own-goal this afternoon and FA merely confirmed what I have long suspected about him.

I don't agree Alonso is the best current driver.

I think he should be disqualified from the German GP. He clearly took an unfair advantage by having his team mate slow to allow him to pass. This is against the F1 rules and is therefore a form a cheating. He was knowingly involved in that cheating and should therefore be disqualified.

Neither he or Ferrari will be bothered by a fine. The penalty should be a loss of position and of championship points.

Andrew.

If Alonso is the best current driver than I'll stop watching F1! I think that both Vettel and Hamilton are faster and both Button and Weber are smarter and more eficient!

Alonso is a disgraceful WDC and certainly overrated as a true racer!

You're at least 4 years too late. Who dethroned the most successful driver in this History and became the youngest GP winner, WDC and STILL RETAINS the title of youngest 2xWDC only to lose out on his 3rd WDC by 1 point with all the non-sense that Mclaren mechanics/staff were doing.

I honestly do not think most of you have even been following pre-2007, or you have selective-short memories.

And I guess I'm the only who thinks Senna was over-hyped, Prost was a much better pilot of that era... except he didn't die and get a James Dean teenagers wet dream status like Senna.

I partly agree with you on Senna 672. He was brilliant, no question. But how can you ignore drivers like Caracciola (the original rainmeister), Fangio, Mario Andretti, Prost and Schumacher? All were men of their era.

Take a look at some of the early in-car footage of Fangio testing in the Maserati 250F. It is every bit as engaging and awesome as the on-board qualifying laps of Senna - but 40 years earlier.

Andrew.

You're obviously a Nando fan and I can appreciate that but we are talking about today and not what happened 5 years ago. The same way you claim Alonso is the best, Schumacher can put him to shame with his 7 titles and no I'm not a Schumi fan at all!
Also, I agree on Prost vs Senna, Prost was the smarter and more efficient driver. And to finish this nonsense I have been watching F1 since the early 90' not every single race but most of them!

672,

It was the current crop of F1 drivers including Alonso and Schumacher who voted Senna as the all time greatest and whilst you are entitled to your opinion I will go with the opinions of those who actually know what they are talking about.

As to Alonso he is a good driver but not an all time great. That potential accolade disappeared when he was beaten on the track and forced out of the team by a rookie. No wonder he hates Hamilton so much; Lewis has cost him at least two additional WDCs, significantly tarnished his reputation and called into question the quality of his judgement.

If he was truly " all time great" material he would have stayed at McLaren and fought his corner assuming that it could have overlooked his attempt to blackmail it into giving him number one driver status. Instead, in much the same way that Senna destroyed Prost within McLaren, it took Hamilton just one season to humiliate a two time champion whose sense of self-entitlement beggars belief.

We have seen it again this weekend and frankly it stinks.

Spain has some great sporting embassadors at the moment and is enjoying a wonderful year of sporting achievement. Sadly FA is not adding to that list.

Oh and by the way I have been watching F1 since the early 1960s which does not make me an expert but does give me a reasonable perspective on the various runners and riders.
