Schumacher 'deserves support' says Mercedes' Haug

(GMM) Norbert Haug has played down the latest criticisms of Michael Schumacher's performance in 2010.

Eddie Jordan, the seven time world champion's first F1 employer back in 1991, this week described the German's decision to return to the sport as a "huge personal error".

"To pitch yourself against young men 20 years younger than you is simply against the laws of physics and medicine," the Irishman told Germany's Sport Bild.

Mercedes' competition director Haug hit back: "He (Schumacher) deserves our support, he fits with our team, he still has the speed.

"We believe in him, and so do his fans," he added.

Schumacher, 41, has written off his chances of winning the current championship, but he thinks his performance hasn't been too bad in 2010.

"I'm pretty happy with myself," said the German.

"We have made a few mistakes and there are some things we can improve, but all in all ... I don't think there are many who can return after a three year break at the age of 41," added Schumacher.

Let's not write him off just yet.

I already wrote him off for this year, next year it's a fresh start and he may be able to get on terms with the new car!

(GMM) Norbert Haug is convinced Michael Schumacher is the ideal teammate for Nico Rosberg at Mercedes.

The seven time world champion's lukewarm return to formula one this year has been much criticized, but competition boss Haug says the German marque is happy with its current lineup.

"For the rest of the year Michael will concentrate on achieving the absolute best results. And next year he will go for the title," he is quoted by Kicker magazine.

Haug refuses to blame Mercedes' drivers for the Brackley based team's difficult 2010 season.

"I would like no other lineup than Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg," he insisted.

As for the criticism of 41-year-old Schumacher's recent performances, Haug said: "I find it unnecessary to defend a seven time world champion.

"On the other hand I also understand the discussion. But the answer to the question as to whether Michael still has it, quite clearly 'yes'," added Haug.

Well he doesn't have Ferrari International Assistance (FIA) to ensure he gets what he wants. He is (was) a great driver but all good things must come to an end. Maybe he should save his dignity instead of feeding his ego.

Cheers

Sure and, when he is 80 years old I guess he deserves a ride because of the past! There can be no doubt of his greatness but it is over. Time to move on. One reason I lost interest in F1 is he and Ferrari.

Cheers

He's not the only one to blame. Simply put, his car is not as fast as the rest. Put Schumi in Seb V. car then let's see his performance.

No panic' in Schumacher's push for pace - Vettel
Racing series F1

Michael Schumacher's return to F1 is on track, according to Sebastian Vettel.

Germany's newer sensation, once nicknamed 'Baby Schumi' by the domestic press, said he is not among those who believe 41-year-old Schumacher's comeback this year has been a failure.

"It is far from easy to return after a three year break, even though he was never entirely away from Formula One," Vettel told the German magazine Der Spiegel.

"The cars have changed, the tyres as well. Many things are not the way that he had become accustomed to."

The 23-year-old backed F1's only seven time world champion to complete his return to full competitiveness.

"If someone can do it, it is him. When I look at his face and read his body language, I do not see any confusion or panic," added Vettel.
