Prost enlisted as Bahrain GP steward

Yet another former world champion has stepped into the mix for this weekend's sensational 2010 season opener in Bahrain.

This season's opening race of the FIA Formula One season already boasts active drivers' title winners Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso who all posed for photographers in Thursday's FIA press conference.

And shortly afterwards, it emerged that quadruple world champion Alain Prost will act as a steward throughout the race weekend.

The sport's governing body, the FIA, confirmed late last year that permanent stewards in 2010 will "sit with experienced former F1 drivers" in order to "reach decisions very efficiently".

55-year-old Frenchman Prost, the arch-nemesis of 2010 rookie Bruno Senna's late uncle Ayrton, won four titles with 51 wins to his credit in the 80s and 90s, and headed his eponymous team until 2001.

Meanwhile, the World Motor Sport Council met in Bahrain on Thursday, and vowed to take "the most appropriate action" in the wake of USF1's failure to appear for the first race of the season.

For the first time since his team collapsed in 2001, quadruple world champion Alain Prost is set to become a near-regular in Formula One this season.

The 55-year-old Frenchman kicked off FIA president Jean Todt's new initiative by working alongside the three other stewards in Bahrain last weekend.

Before Sunday's season opener, Prost hinted he might reprise the role elsewhere in 2010.

"It's an experiment; we will see how it goes," he said.

As it happens, the stewards did not have a busy time at Sakhir, but Prost has said he will nonetheless be back.

"I'll do it three or four times this season," he is quoted as saying by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

The magazine said double world champion Emerson Fittipaldi is also expected be a steward in 2010, as will 1996 title winner Damon Hill, Alex Wurz, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Johnny Herbert.
