Mercedes must win...or will exit F1

(GMM) The newly launched Mercedes GP team needs to win grands prix in order to maintain the support of its parent Daimler. That is the clear message of the German carmaker's chief executive Dieter Zetsche, who told manager-magazin.com - in an interview to be published on Friday - that winning is "a condition" of the project.

Mercedes, along with its shareholder Aabar, has taken over the title-winning Brawn team and is fielding an all-German driver lineup this year featuring Michael Schumacher.

But Zetsche warned that, notwithstanding some expected defeats, if there are "clear signs" that Daimler's money could be better spent outside of F1, "we'll have to make a new decision".

"The fact that Aabar came along with us as an investor not only shows that we are distributing our risk, it is also a signal that the formula one team must pay for itself," he added.

"We take our guidance from Gottlieb Daimler, who said 'The best, or nothing at all'," Zetsche said.

It kinda makes sense but Gottlieb has not driven a W210 or a W220! He would not have been proud! Anyway, I can see his point but still think that there are a lot of factors in F1 and no one has stayed at the top for very long!
Let's hope this is going to be as good as last year (for Brawn) or better!

That's funny! Actually, I recently took an 800 mile day trip in a friend's diesel W210 and was impressed. I know this chassis gets a lot of grief but it was pretty nice, and we had no problems. It's been a good car for him over the years.

The 220 I have no experience with but have heard he horror stories about the early production models. My MB mechanic friends say the real bomb was the W140.

I love my 124 and 126. I think that was the pinnacle period for MB.

I agree about the 124 and the 126! They are still my favourite too! On the other hand there are good signs at Mercedes lately. The 221, 204 and now 212 are all supposed to be miles away from the models they replaced. This is according to the Mercedes mechanics and owners!

I think you're right. The new C class is supposed to be super reliable. My MB mechanic friends say they never come in for anything but routine service.

Supposed to be? How old are the oldest w204's?
I want to believe that the quality is going up but lately it seems everything breaks down much faster as it used to. I'm betting economics have something to do with it.

I've got some friends that are mercedes dealership mechanics, and they say they hardly ever see the new C class come in for anything other than routine maintenance.

I think the W210 has an undeserved reputation. I think this is mainly because it looked so much different than everything else Mercedes made at the time. People just got used to lines and angles and were shocked when Mercedes whipped out a car that was designed with a supercomputer instead of a ruler.

Here is a point that I would like to make to all the W210 haters out there: Was the W210 really "radical" in its design or did the designers look to the stroke 8 for inspiration?

IF you use your imagination a little, the front end of a stroke 8 looks like the front end of a W210 in my opinion.

I don't thing anyone on this forum hates any Mercedes model! I just know for a fact that W210 and even worse W220 broke down more than any of the other models. It was mostly electronic issues, but that didn't make it feel any better for the owners.
