The very persistent Stefan GP team?

Without an official slot for the team, the Serbian team doesn't seem to give up.
They have earned some respect IMO. Intriguing story.

Stefan GP: We're going to Bahrain
02 February 2010

Formula 1 hopefuls Stefan Grand Prix have confirmed that they still hope to be on this year's grid by sending a container measuring twelve metres from its base in Serbia to Bahrain, scene of the first Grand Prix of the year.

With rumours circulating that new teams Campos and US F1's futures are shaky, Stefan - which has purchased a selection of Toyota F1 chassis, engines and gearboxes - is continuing to develop an Formula 1 car and plans this year, should it not be taken onto the grid.

'Stefan Grand Prix becomes the first team in F1 history who did send a 40 foot container full of equipment to the race in Bahrain without having entry for the 2010 season!' a Tuesday statement reads on the Belgrade-based team's website.

'On Friday 29th January we showed our spirit, and how serious our management and our employees are when they say that we are pushing to get the entry, and that they want to race in the 2010 season.'

No representative of the Stefan GP team was available for comment upon being contacted by GPUpdate.net on Tuesday afternoon.

Formula One sources suggest that the fledgling Stefan GP team is in the process of opening up a 2010 entry spot by effectively forcing the downfall of the new Campos Meta F1 team.

Stefan GP has a deal with Toyota, and its new car--which would have been the Toyota TF110, had the Japanese manufacturer remained in F1 this year--will test in Portugal later this month. Stefan has lined up Toyota protégé Kazuki Nakajima to drive it.

The Serbian-owned outfit has positioned itself as an unofficial “first reserve” should one of the new teams fail before the first race, at the Bahrain circuit in mid-March.

Sources claim that Campos is behind with its payments to Italian chassis constructor Dallara, which has a deal believed to be worth e16 million ($22 million) a year to supply the team with cars and technology.

Sources also suggest that the situation has progressed to the stage where Dallara can now sell the F1 project, and that Stefan will buy the intellectual property. That would leave Campos without a car and free up its entry spot. Whether Stefan would make any use of the Dallara knowledge is unknown.

Team boss Zoran Stefanovich is associated closely with F1 czar Bernie Ecclestone, and we would presume that the new team's passage to the grid in Bahrain will be eased by the sport's supremo.

However, the FIA may yet have something to say about that. New FIA president Jean Todt used to work for Ferrari, and Stefan's technical chief is Mike Coughlan--the ex-McLaren man at the heart of the 2007 industrial-espionage affair that saw Coughlan in possession of confidential Ferrari F1 technical documents.

If Campos fails and Stefan succeeds, driver Bruno Senna will be on the market, joining the likes of Nick Heidfeld as possible teammates to the Japanese driver.

Stefan faces at least one other notable problem: While there are still F1 personnel in Cologne--home to Toyota's motorsports base--who can join the new project, many Toyota F1 designers and engineers have moved to other teams, notably Lotus.

Interesting background info: Stefan GP brought a lawsuit against the FIA / Mosley some time ago..
While the FIA had apparently been willing to issue a grid spot for the Stefan GP team, it was made dependent on Stefan GP buying mandated Cosworth engines. The team wanted a different engine.

Bernie Ecclestone is backing Stefan GP to get a grid spot this season, and sees Ralf Schumacher as an ideal candidate to head its driver line up.

The Serbian team, owned by millionaire Zoran Stefanovic, is currently operating out of Toyota's old factory in Cologne, after striking a deal to take over development of the ex-F1 team's 2010 chassis and engine. It has already said it will test at the end of February and that it intends to send equipment to the first race in Bahrain to prove its credentials as a viable F1 outfit.

Now Ecclestone has thrown his support behind Stefan GP and believes it could replace any team that fails to make the opening race.

"I do not believe in the participation of US F1 and Campos," he told German publication Sport Bild. "Instead, I have good contact with Stefan and am trying to get this team a starting place. Ralf Schumacher would be an ideal driver for them. He has experience, he knows the team."

Schumacher hasn't competed in F1 since he left Toyota in 2007, but showed an interest in making a comeback around the same time as his brother Michael said he would return last year. Ex-Williams and Toyota-backed driver Kazuki Nakajima is expected to test for Stefan GP at the Portimao circuit in the Algarve in late February and is likely to be a strong candidate for a drive if the team is allowed to race.

Former-McLaren designer and Spygate plotter Mike Coughlan is on the technical staff and it is believed that long-time McLaren team manager and Liegate conspirator Dave Ryan and ex-Midland, Spyker and Force India team prinicipal Colin Kolles are also involved with the team.

I don't know about Ralf, he never really inspired me! As for Kaz, he can never finish a race near the front!

Stefan ends Campos hopes by buying Dallara car (GMM) The ambitious Stefan GP outfit may have this week hammered the final nail into the coffin of the 2010 formula one entrant Campos.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, and Finland's Turun Sanomat, report that notwithstanding A1 boss Tony Teixeira's desire to buy into Campos, the Spanish team may be unable to race this season.

Because Campos fell behind in payments to its car constructor Dallara, the Italian company may have sold the rights to Campos' car to Stefan GP.

It means that even if Campos comes up with the money to pay its overdue bills, including to the engine supplier Cosworth, it will not have a car for 2010.

Stefan GP reportedly does not intend to actually use the Campos/Dallara chassis, because it is well advanced with preparations to run Toyota's 2010 package.

In addition to Kazuki Nakajima and Ralf Schumacher, also Jacques Villeneuve is being linked with Stefan's 2010 plans.

It means Bruno Senna's grand prix debut is now uncertain, and the Brazilian admitted on Wednesday that Campos will "hopefully" begin winter testing "in the near future".
