Alonso poses with the new Ferrari F10

The launch of Ferrari's new F10 machine marks the long-awaited arrival of two-times world champion Fernando Alonso in the Maranello stable - but can the Spaniard become the team's new favourite son?

The departure of Michael Schumacher to Mercedes has, in fact, done Alonso a favour.

Ever since his original retirement, Schumacher had been a regular in the Italian outfit's pit and paddock, offering his advice and guidance to the team and its drivers, talking race tactics and laying down his glowing aura of authority throughout the team.

Felipe Massa, once German Schumacher's occasionally competitive team-mate, regularly benefited from the advice coming from the world champion on the sidelines and as the relationship blossomed, Schumacher's replacement Kimi Raikkonen struggled to squeeze his way into the team's favour.

But this is a different situation, and it all seems pretty clear that the same will not happen when Alonso takes on Massa this year.

Ferrari has been trying to get its hands on Alonso for some time - and Di Montezemolo openly reminded those at the launch that "when Ferrari decided in 2005 to take Raikkonen the alternative was Alonso".

Back then, Alonso was in the middle of back-to-back championships with Renault. There was no way his manager Flavio Briatore, who was also the boss of Renault F1 at the time, was going to let the Spaniard out of his team's grasp.

When Ferrari turned to Raikkonen they knew he was always going to be fast, if not, some may argue, reliable. And when Massa stepped up to the plate and delivered, Ferrari was happy to have a pair of drivers who could fight for the team's success.

But as Raikkonen faded and Massa was sidelined through injury it became more and more evident that Ferrari simply wanted to prise the Finn out to make way for the driver they failed to get back in 2005, a driver of strong reputation who they think has the greatest chance of following on from Schumacher's long legacy.

"He now finds himself in a fundamental moment of his life," Di Montezemolo said of Alonso. "He's matured, young and strong; he has won two World Championships, in 2005 and 2006, beating us 100 per cent."

Interestingly, however, Alonso has been through a lot since then - and during that time there have been two experiences that should have strengthened his resolve but instead failed to drive him forward.

His move to McLaren had the potential to be a dream but, after being hailed as the man to lead the team to championship victory, he instead was often matched or beaten by shining light Lewis Hamilton and ended up battered and bruised by some heavy internal politics.

His return to Renault plunged him into yet more turmoil, with a car that started in the midfield and, apart from occasional moments, failed to build. And as Crashgate blew up, he certainly won't have enjoyed watching Hamilton and McLaren rise in glory when he could not steer his team in a similar direction.

Similar challenges may await him at Ferrari and the expectations for Alonso's arrival are high. But although Schumacher may be back on the grid trying to get in his way, the German's departure from the Ferrari sidelines should leave the road clear for the Spaniard to stamp his own mark on the team in a way Raikkonen was never able to do...
