Schumi satisfied with first day back

Friday, 31 July 2009 00:00

Michael Schumacher was satisfied with his performance on first day back in a Formula 1 car in more than 15 months.

The seven-time world champion began serious preparation for his impending return to F1 competition by putting a 2007 Ferrari through its paces at Mugello on Friday.

Schumacher had spent time on the simulator at Ferrari’s Maranello factory on Thursday and quickly got back into the groove during Friday’s testing, completing 67 laps with a best time of 1m23.736s.

The German was reassured by his pace and consistency, even if the specification of the car he was driving made lap time comparisons difficult.

“It’s a great thing getting back on the track with an F1 machine, even if this was a car from 2007 from the F1 Clienti department with slicks usually used in GP2, and obviously there is no real reference point.

“After a couple of laps I was able to drive consistent lap times and I’m happy with the performance.

“Now we’ve got to see how my body and the muscles respond in the next days.”

It emerged on Friday that Ferrari is seeking dispensation for Schumacher to test its current F60 car, which would require an exemption from the in-season testing ban.

The Italian squad noted that the Mugello test was a private affair managed by Ferrari’s F1 Clienti department, which prepares former grand prix cars for wealthy enthusiasts.

Team alliance agree to let Schumacher test - Howett

Schumacher gets the green light from FOTA
FOTA vice-chairman John Howett has confirmed that eight of the ten Formula One teams are happy if Michael Schumacher conducts a one-off test at the wheel of Felipe Massa's F60 Ferrari.

The Italian team had made the request to the teams alliance, as well as the governing FIA and non-FOTA teams Williams and Force India, so that Schumacher has a chance to acquaint with the Maranello-built car prior to his Valencia comeback next month.

"Toyota's understanding is that all FOTA teams have agreed to accept this request," Howett, also president of the Toyota team, is quoted as saying by Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"The situation for Felipe is very unfortunate, and this is a sporting gesture which I am confident Ferrari will respect," he added.

It is believed he is referring to the fact that the teams have asked Ferrari to ensure that Schumacher is simply acquainting with the red car, rather than conducting any sort of technical development work.

The Telegraph said the FIA received the approval of some teams, including Red Bull, "with conditions attached.
"

Ferrari confirmed that the request was made to the FIA and said it is "waiting for a reply."

40-year-old Schumacher lapped Ferrari's Mugello circuit nearly 70 times on Friday at the wheel of a privately-owned 2007 Ferrari prepared by the team's 'F1 Clienti' division, bypassing the rules preventing in-season testing.

"It's a great thing getting back on the track with an F1 even if this was a car from 2007 from the F1 Clienti department with slicks usually used in GP2 and obviously there is no real point of reference," he is quoted as saying by the Ferrari website.

"After a couple of laps I was able to drive constant times and I'm happy with the performance. Now we've got to see how my body and the muscles respond in the next days," Schumacher added.

So why does it seem I'm the only one here who thinks the whole Schumi back thing is bad for F1? 3 pages of talk about a driver who's best years are in the past driving for a team that is largely irrelevant this year when a battle between 2 new (newish) teams is shaping up. I couldn't care less what Schumi or Ferrari does, they don't matter.

^ If you don't find this to be remarkably exciting and dramatic, you're no fan of sport.

Apparently, while some see the donut, others just see the hole.

Yeah I see holes, a bunch of them. This whole patronizing crap about me not being a fan of sport because I'd rather see someone new race is BS and the exact reason I think it's bad for F1. The sport was better the last 3 years w/o Schumi. I'd rather be talking about what Brawn (if anything given the testing ban and their budget) could do to get back to the top. But that's not what the rest of year will be about now. If Schumi returns to top form and proves to be anything more than a PR stunt that's great for him. But it does nothing to help F1 grow. Isn't wanting F1 to be a great racing series what being a fan is all about?
