Happy Birthday -- Sir Jackie Stewart

Written by: SPEED Staff / GMM

Happy Birthday -- Sir Jackie Stewart turns 70 on Thursday, but the former triple world champion insists he is not about to retire. The Scot's ongoing connection to Formula One is as the Royal Bank of Scotland's sponsor ambassador, and he will be back in that role at the British Grand Prix next weekend. "I've noticed what happens to a lot of other people when they do (retire) that the light goes out of their life and they suddenly feel old," he told Scotland's Herald newspaper.

Let's hope he enjoys many more.

Three World Championships speak for themselves as does a win to start ratio approaching one in three but for me Sir Jackie Stewart's greatest legacy was his crusade to improve the safety of drivers and indirectly therefore spectators.

He's not everyone's cup of tea but I've appreciated the fact that he has been unreservedly outspoken when it comes to Mosley's manifest short-comings.

I am sure that JYS would love to see JB sign-off a last British win at what appears to be the last British GP at Silverstone next Sunday.

Jacie Stewart was one of the all time greats of F1. I watched him race at the old Nuerburgring, Zandvoort, Zolder, Estoril, and other tracks, and his precision was truly astounding. You could have laid a yard stick next to the corners I watched him go through, and he would hit the same spots every time.
I am old enough to remember perhaps the first use of a on board F1 camera in Roman Polanski's Jackie Stewart F1 film 'Weekend of a Champion' filmed at the 71 Monaco GP which he actually won.
There is a 1973 youtube vid with Stewart driving and explaining the old Nuerburgring with Nordschleife (Northern Loop).
Cheers
