F1 could live without Ferrari - Mosley
Budget caps issue more important than a single team

Mosley holding a 'one lost, ten found' point of view
Formula One could live without the sport's most famous, successful and longest-serving team, Max Mosley insists.

The FIA President's disquieting comments come after war threatened to break out between the Paris body and Maranello-based Ferrari, enraged at the introduction of budget caps.

The furious Italian team has been making subtle noises about quitting F1 over the dispute, even though it issued a statement on Friday saying it wants to avoid "harmful" and "pointless controversy."

Ferrari, the only team to have contested every season of the modern world championship since 1950, is the sport's most evocative name whose absence would be an incalculable blow.

But "The sport could survive without Ferrari," Mosley told the Financial Times, although acknowledging the potential seriousness of the loss.

"It would be very, very sad to lose Ferrari. It is the Italian national team," said the Briton.

However, Mosley clearly believes that the stakes are too high to gamble the potential "collapse of F1" on the wishes of its most powerful team.

He also thinks Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo is simply misguided.

"I hope and think that when a team goes to its board and says, 'I want to go to war with the FIA, because I want to be able to spend 100m (pounds sterling) more than the FIA want me to spend', then the board will say, 'why can't you spend 40m if the other teams can do it?'"

Mosley also suggested that, even if Ferrari does go, his plan will safeguard the long-term participation of other car manufacturers.

"The message I'm getting from the board of two or three of the manufacturers is: 'if you can get it so that the cheque we write is not more than 25m (euro), you can consider this a pretty permanent arrangement'."

Well I would be mad too. Ferarri is a race car that they modify for street use, all the others are street cars they try to race.

I'd like to see Ferrari continue myself, but these are very lean times.

+ 1.

With advancing age, Mosley and Ecclestone seem to get increasingly delusional.
The jury is still out whether the available KERS power burst with the extra weight of the system provides a competitive advantage?
How the heck is forcing KERS technology on the teams supposed to help in saving cost, and how will cars entering the track on cold slicks be able to safely merge with traffic?
As much as a cap on F1 team spending is needed, it needs to be well balanced and within reason IMO.
Too much, and F1 might get to share CART's fate.

Bernie Ecclestone has vowed to prevent the brawl between Max Mosley and Luca di Montezemolo turning into all-out war.

After Ferrari president Montezemolo - furious about the FIA president's budget capping - hinted that the famous marque could walk away from F1, Mosley replied by insisting the sport could survive without the Prancing Horse.

The Times newspaper claims some Ferrari figures believe Mosley wants to "destroy" Montezemolo, but Ecclestone insists: "I won't let it happen."

The 78-year-old F1 chief executive said: "The trouble with Max is he's not capable, like in the past, of wrapping things up nicely with a pink ribbon and things. He wants to put it in an old cardboard box and tie it with string."

Briton Ecclestone believes the row is equally the fault of flamboyant Montezemolo.

"The trouble with Luca is that you shouldn't let Max ever be in a position where he can start a debate or an argument. He's reasonably clever and you won't win," he added.

Ecclestone seems happy to play the mediator in negotiations about the budget cap, after the World Motor Sport Council last week set a voluntary figure at 40m pounds sterling.

"It would appear that everyone is in favor of the cap, including Ferrari, if we can get them to agree, which we can," Ecclestone told the newspaper.

"However, there is concern over the amount that is referred to in the cap for some of the teams and also the two-tier system. So these are probably not monumental things to sort out," he added.

This is pretty serious..

F1 without Ferrari is like DTM without German cars. I hope they continue!

Hmm, Jean Todt to the rescue? Or perhaps Niki Lauda?
Hey, if you really want to shake up / wake up F1, ex Minardi's Paul Stoddart?
