Barcelona & Jerez pre season testing

All ten teams in action at Circuit de Catalunya
Barcelona - Monday - Test day 1

BMW Sauber starting to show good pace in testing
For the first time since the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, all ten teams were in action together as the Melbourne countdown continues. Amongst the highlights today as the teams reconvened at the home of the Spanish Grand Prix, were the first public tests of the new Brawn Mercedes BGP001 and Toro Rosso Ferrari STR4.

Nick Heidfeld started the latest test for the BMW Sauber team and topped the timesheets for the Swiss-based team. Heidfeld completed 96 laps of the 4.655km circuit with a best lap of 1:20.338s coming on his 79th tour.

Kimi Raikkonen was unable to complete much mileage for Ferrari in the morning with the team checking the underside of the new F60 challenger. The 2007 champion was however to start running in earnest in the afternoon ending the day second fastest six-tenths of a second adrift of Heidfeld.

Jarno Trulli kicked off the Toyota test programme with the team running a new front wing on the TF109. Trulli was able to put in a solid 121 laps on his way to the third fastest time, just a fraction slower than Raikkonen.

Jenson Button was charged with putting miles on the new Brawn Grand Prix machine. With a predominantly plain white livery, the British veteran was immediately on the pace, despite this being their first proper test. Button was able to complete 82 laps with a best time of 1:21.140s placing him fourth fastest overall and just eight-tenths off the ultimate pace.

Nelson Piquet has struggled with the Renault R29 so far in pre-season testing. Today the Brazilian racer was much closer to the pace as he set the fifth fastest time, half a second adrift of Button.

By their own admission, Scuderia Toro Rosso would have hoped to have a longer and more thorough test programme with the STR4 package. Sebastien Bourdais gave the new Red Bull-designed car its maiden public outing today and was able to put in an encouraging 86 laps and the sixth fastest time just ahead of Mark Webber in the Red Bull Renault.

Adrian Sutil was eighth fastest in the Mercedes-powered Force India, putting in 129 laps in the new machine and lapping nearly four-tenths clear of Kazuki Nakajima in the Williams Toyota.

Heikki Kovalainen was on test duty for the McLaren Mercedes team and for once, the Finn enjoyed a dry circuit for the majority of the day as the team ran the 2009-specification rear wing on the MP4-24. Today the McLaren featured small cuts in the underbody ahead of the rear wheels as the team continue to evaluate aerodynamic options.

However, McLaren’s recent testing form continued as Kovalainen propped up the bottom of the timesheets with the tenths fastest time, 2.6 seconds off Heidfeld’s best and a tenth slower than Nakajima.

1 . N. Heidfeld - BMW Sauber F1.09 - 1:20.338 (+ 0.000 ) - 96 laps

Thanks for the update; Catalunya is one of my favorite tracks both for cars and bikes. If I could travel to only one track that might be it.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

We used to represent Rio Tinto Barcelona in the ME, beside Berlin and Amsterdam, my favorite
European City (Lisbon/Estoril are pretty cool too).
I have known Barcelona since the days of Franco. The best Paella can be found at a no name seafood restaurant located in a big white washed building at the harbor end of Las Ramblas.

Barcelona day two - Raikkonen sweeps Ferrari to the top

Barcelona day two - Raikkonen sweeps Ferrari to the top

On what could be his final day in the car before journeying to Melbourne later this month, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen staked his first claim on the 2009 season on Tuesday, topping the timesheets as testing continued at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Raikkonen clocked a best of 1m 20.314s to put Ferrari almost six-tenths of a second clear of the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima.

Despite the sunny conditions at the Spanish track, the Finn only managed to complete 55 laps before a problem with the F60’s KERS cooling system brought his programme to a premature end. Team mate Felipe Massa will be in action for the world champions on Wednesday.

Veteran driver Rubens Barrichello enjoyed his first taste of the Brawn BGP 001. Barrichello covered 111 laps on his way to third in the times. Just over two-tenths down on the Brazilian was Jarno Trulli for Toyota. Trulli initially worked on set-up, before switching to longer runs in the afternoon. He covered 121 laps in total.

"Today was my last day of testing for the winter,” said the Italian. “We again did a lot of laps including some interesting long runs as we finalised our preparations for Melbourne. It's clear we will only find out the true picture in Australia but I'm happy with our work in the course of the tests we've done. The car has been competitive and consistent so we can head into the first race with confidence. I feel ready."

More details to follow.

Unofficial Tuesday times from Barcelona:
1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari F60, 1:20.314
2. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams FW31, 1:20.907

Barcelona day four - dazzling Barrichello ends test on a high

Barcelona day four - dazzling Barrichello ends test on a high

The potent pace of the Brawn BGP 001 continued to impress at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Thursday, as this week’s multi-team test - the last before the season opening Australian Grand Prix later this month - drew to a close.

Rubens Barrichello finished fastest in the newly-launched car, clocking a best time of 1m 18.926s to finish eight-tenths of a second ahead of Williams’ Nico Rosberg.

Third quickest was Toyota’s Timo Glock, who covered 128 laps. Glock’s programme focused on the TF109’s set-up, and even though he stopped on the circuit with a mechanical problem on his last lap, the German was pleased at the end of the session.

"That was another useful day to round off our good winter of testing,” he said. “We did more work on set-up and long runs and everything went well until the very last lap! Still, overall the car feels strong and we seem to have good pace so we can look forward to Australia. Of course we'll only see the real results on Saturday in Melbourne but everyone at Toyota can be happy with our work so far.”

More details to follow.

Unofficial Thursday times from Barcelona:
1. Rubens Barrichello, Brawn BGP 001, 1:18.926
2. Nico Rosberg, Williams FW31, 1:19.774

4. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull RB5, 1:20.576
5. Fernando Alonso, Renault R29, 1:20.664
6. Felipe Massa, Ferrari F60, 1:20.677
7. Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber F1.09, 1:20.740
8. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren MP4-24, 1:20.869
9. Sebastien Buemi, Toro Rosso STR4, 1:21.013
10. Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India VJM02, 1:21.045
11. Sebastien Bourdais, Toro Rosso STR4, 1:21.629

Hamilton and McLaren continue to struggle

Hamilton and McLaren continue to struggle
Barcelona - McLaren Mercedes - Test day 4

McLaren seemingly facing an uphill battle
McLaren Mercedes concluded their test programme this afternoon at Circuit de Catalunya with defending champion Lewis Hamilton back behind the wheel for the final day of running at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit.

The final day of the Barcelona test was spent focusing on mechanical set-up, developing MP4-24 and learning directions for improvement.

Hamilton was today eighth fastest of the 11 drivers on track, his best time just under two seconds off the ultimate pace and 11th fastest on the week.
To underline the struggle McLaren face, team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was slowest of the 20 drivers this week, three seconds off Barrichello’s Thursday best.

The team now travels back to Jerez for the final pre-season test before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix.

Our friends at McLaren are in trouble. At the bottom of the charts throughout testing this week. They have 4 testing days left to get it together. On the other hand the former Honda factory team Braun GP is on the top of the charts with MB power,

The joke around the teams is Honda re thinking their decision in view of the Brawn BGP 001 performance.

Brawn on pole for title bombshell
Button and Barrichello upbeat for Melbourne

Astounding pace – ballast or no ballast
The newly-rescued Brawn GP on Thursday continued to astound its rivals at Barcelona, on the last day of the final group test of the winter.

Not only was Rubens Barrichello atop the timesheets, he bettered team-mate Jenson Button's astonishing time of Wednesday and was nearly a full second clear of the quickest of his dumbfounded rivals.

The cynics are not now wondering if the BGP001 is fuelled light, but how much below the mandatory 605kg minimum weight it is circulating.

Up and down the pitlane, however, the message is clear: if Brawn is running representative fuel and a legal weight, the car is the runaway favourite to win in Australia.

Asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport who he would put his money on for Melbourne, BMW's Robert Kubica laughed: "Button!"

"Seeing a truly competitive car again really excites me," said Barrichello, who switched from Ferrari to Brawn's previous guise Honda in 2006.

"I feel bursting with energy. After two or three not so good seasons I'm feeling positive again. And I'm back to win," the Brazilian added.

Felipe Massa, Barrichello's younger countryman, agrees that on current form, Ferrari is no longer leading the field.

"We are still very competitive but behind the Brawn," he acknowledged.
"I would say their lap times are just much quicker than anyone can do.”

"I'm not an engineer so I cannot say they have ballast or not, but even if they have no ballast and they put ballast (in) they will be quick anyway.”

"It is very surprising," added Massa, the 2008 championship runner-up.

Button, to occupy the sister Mercedes-powered Brawn in 2009, beamed as he told reporters the real test will be at Albert Park in two weeks.

"This is fun but we have a long way to go and we still don't know where we stand," the Briton insisted. "It's a quick car and there is also room for improvement."

Quoted by Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 29-year-old added: "For sure we will be fast at the first race but I don't know about after four or five races."

Button said the F1 fraternity should not be surprised about Brawn's form.

I like surprising people, but I really want to surprise people at the races. Perhaps people forgot that we have good facilities and talented people who can make competitive cars. Before we went on the track many people in the factory knew we had done a good job.”

"When I went to the factory after the (Honda withdrawal) announcement I found everyone at work as usual. The results show that we kept our heads down on our goals.”

"We seem quick at the moment but we don't know about the others: Trulli looks excellent, and Ferrari. There are many people who with little fuel can do very quick lap times," said Button.

The 2009 pre-season has now concluded for many teams, with the exception of Brawn, Renault, McLaren and Williams, whose last winter outing will be at Jerez next week.

The Brawn surprise strikes again
The final test session ahead of the 2009 season began today at the Circuito de Jerez, with two weeks to go before the Australian Grand Prix. Warm and sunny weather greeted the few teams present at the Spanish venue.

Continuing a trend that impressed many last week in Barcelona, the Brawn GP team's BGP 001 was again the fastest car on the track. With Rubens Barrichello at the wheel, 102 laps were completed as the Brazilian set the pace for the better part of the day. The session's fastest lap was his, at 1:19.236.

Fernando Alonso's day did not go as well: the Spaniard crashed his R29 very early on, requiring repairs which took several hours to complete. The double World Champion did however have enough time to complete 40 runs and sign the day's second-best lap.

Nico Hulkenberg was on hand for the Williams team; the German counted 69 laps and was third-quickest. All three drivers at Jerez set times within the same second.

McLaren was scheduled to begin its final test programme today as well but decided otherwise. The team maintains its four-day schedule but will begin tomorrow instead.

Jerez - 15/03/2009
1 . R. Barrichello - Brawn GP Mercedes BGP001 - 1:19.236 (+ 0.000) - 107 laps
2 . F. Alonso - Renault R29 - 119.819 (+ 0.583) - 40 laps
3 . N. Hulkenberg - Williams Toyota FW31 - 1:20.015 (+ 0.196) - 69 laps
