Patrick to test for Honda

Patrick to test for Honda
Eurosport - Wed, 11 Jun 13:00:00 2008
Honda has confirmed that Danica Patrick will test one of its Formula One cars later this year, fuelling speculation that the American is also to be given a race chance in the top flight in the not-too-distant future.

Wisconsin-born Patrick currently sits sixth in the IndyCar Series point standings following her historic breakthrough victory at Motegi back in April, the first success by a female driver in the premier open-wheeled championship across the pond.

The 26-year old Andretti Green Racing ace has hinted in interviews at her long-held desire to have an outing in an F1 car. Now it seems that dream has come true.

Honda CEO Nick Fry has admitted to Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung that a test will indeed take place, and that it is likely to do so at either Barcelona or Jerez in Spain in November, following the end of the 2008 F1 campaign.

"We will put her into our car after the season at the latest and see how quick she is," the Briton said.

Honda's current driver Jenson Button had previously joked in an interview with men's lifestyle magazine FHM that 'a girl with big boobs would never be comfortable in the car, and the mechanics wouldn't concentrate. Can you imagine strapping her in? You wouldn't want to be on the circuit with them, would you?'

The last woman to enter the top flight was Giovanna Amati, who attempted to qualify three times for Brabham back in 1992 before being replaced at the ailing British outfit by Damon Hill.

That is going to be interesting! I'm not a big fan of Danica and I think there're faster people in the indy car series but I guess it's good for the image of the sport!

Moving to England early in her career to compete in open wheel racing showed more commitment than Michael Andretti ever did in his F-1 stint.
The Honda test should show how competitive she could be in the highest form of motor sports.
Well, and she looks pretty good in or out of an overall.
Cheers

Never seen an Indy driver survive in the F1 world.........Andretti, Montoya.......just to mention a few of them......the opposite is true........Fittipaldi, Mansell........let me put this way, an F1 pilot will lead an F-Indy competition........the other way around is just NOT TRUE........I believe she will stay with the barbecue and F-Indy friends, circuit leaks, cars running over people at the pits and all that stuff that only happens in US, and F1 doesn't need US.........

It would be nice to have a North American driver in F1 once again, and perhaps have a US Grand Prix return also. . I understand there were a large number of Americans at this years Montreal Grand Prix.
I would drive 3000+ Miles to see a F1 race at Laguna Seca....to see Danica race would be a bonus....

Perhaps a little before your time, but check out the real racer Andretti, Mario, Father of poseur Michael came out of Indy to become Formula One World Champion. So did Jacques Villeneuve.

coughMariocough

And one of the most embarrassing moments of F1 came in the US, and Indy had nothing to do with it. It was all Bernie and Max and F1 and Michelin.

I wouldn't be so fast in suggesting that F1 doesn't need the US. Remember F1 is made up of Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Toyota, etc. THEY decide what markets are best for them. There will be a US race sooner rather than later.

Fry clarifies Patrick test options
Tue 17 Jun, 11:25 AM

Nick Fry has clarified reports that said Danica Patrick, a high-profile female competitor of America's IndyCar Series, is set to make her F1 test debut for the Honda team.

It was reported earlier this month that the 26-year-old is likely to climb aboard the RA108 challenger in November at the Spanish winter test circuits Barcelona or Jerez.

But to the virtual magazine GPWeek, the Brackley-based team's Chief Executive Fry says the truth has been 'exaggerated' by the press.

"What we actually said was that if Danica wants to have a drive in our car at the end of the season, we'd be very open to the idea," the Briton clarified.

"But just to make it very clear, there has been no request thus far from Danica.

"If she would like to, we'd be very happy for her to drive the car. The door is open if she's interested," he added.

Fry also insists that, contrary to speculation that the test would be purely promotional, Patrick would be in the running for a competitive position should she take up the offer of a Honda test.

"These things are too expensive just to run for a bit of fun," he said.

"With an intensely competitive person, they want to be doing it for a purpose."

Fry said more than one test for Patrick, who tips the scales at a petite 45kg, would be the best option.

"I would say that the first step for both of us would be for her to find out what it's like, and what our team's like, and secondly for us to get a fix on how good someone is.

"A single test is probably not enough to do that. Normally what we find, even with somebody with a lot of experience in motorsport, doing two tests is the best thing because the first day is all about understanding the car and the systems, the g-forces and the braking forces.

"So a first day of exploration and a second day of getting down to business is frequently a better way of doing things," Fry added.
