Danica Wins Japan

Danica Patrick made history Saturday as midnight struck.

Patrick became the first woman to win a major auto race by stealing the IndyCar Series' event at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan.

Patrick, led by a smart call by team manager Kyle Moyer of Monrovia, Ind., went the final 51 laps without a pit stop to become the surprise winner of the Japan Indy 300.

Patrick passed two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves three laps from the finish to take the lead as the frontrunners pitted.

Patrick, Castroneves and Ed Carpenter had pitted five laps after the frontrunners, including Scott Dixon, who dominated the second half of the race.

"It's a long time coming," Patrick said on ESPN's television broadcast. "Finally!"

After Dixon and others pitted, Moyer told Patrick that Castroneves was the only driver that could deny her, and she did the rest. Having saved a considerable amount of fuel in the final segment, she stood on the gas and blew past the Brazilian on the 198th lap.

"I knew he was the one to beat," Patrick said. "I was not going to make the mistake of not (going for it)."

Patrick, 26, was quickly greeted by her father, T.J., who has been with her throughout her career.

"This is the best day of my life," he said. "This is what I dreamed about."

Patrick was participating in her 50th IndyCar Series race. Until Saturday, she was best known for becoming the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500.

The race flirted with temperatures too cold for the tires, and Marco Andretti paid the price, spinning into the wall in the first corner of the race.

I was in Columbus at the CART "town hall" meet and greet in summer 2002 where Bobby Rahal, introduced Danica to the crowd. After then event she then drove him and Chris Pook off in a Jag sedan.

As the article says, it has been a while in coming. Now they can tout her as a driver and winner, not just their poster girl.

for an Indy racing, that's Ok, but stopping mentioning this chick in Formula 1.......nobody in that league is capable of driving in F1, andretti and montoya and others failed.......what can I say about a league that doesn't race because of water leaking? and people being friends and looking stupid...c'mon guys, in F1 you are suppose to compete to win, and in Indy you just go there to talk about the weather. look at the camera and smile with other drivers, maybe a barbecue together, that environment simply does not exist in F1, that's real deal, that's how a competition should be, FIndy is much americanized, and that's bull!

Thanks to the Champ Car/IRL merger, professional open wheel racing in North America is being rebuilt.

Andretti jr. thought he could just cruise without the 100% commitment, Montoya had the proven talent to be a champion, but left because of differences with the team management

Suzuki Aguri of the now defunct Super Aguri team compared the business of Formula One with sticking your hand into a piranha tank.
