2008 Jerez Testing: Hamilton quickest on return to Spain

Hamilton quickest on return to Spain
Eurosport - Tue, 12 Feb 19:28:00 2008
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was fastest on the opening day of testing at Jerez as there was no repeat of the racist abuse that made the headlines in Barcelona.

The 23-year-old led the way with the fastest lap of the day - 1:19.102 seconds - with McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa just over a tenth slower.

Hamilton, who won four races and finished as overall runner-up in his rookie season, has become a hate figure in Spain for his rivalry with double world champion Fernando Alonso.

Robert Kubica was an encouraging third fastest in his BMW Sauber with 2008 team-mate Nick Heidfeld sixth of the 16 runners on track.

It was the second day of testing for the Williams Toyota team after they signed off a front wing development on Monday for use on the FW30 package.

Kazuki Nakajima was fourth fastest while Nico Rosberg suffered an off-track moment in the morning and ended the day eighth fastest.

Nelson Piquet and Lucas Di Grassi were in action for Renault, recording the fifth and 13th best times respectively while Mark Webber and David Coulthard were back out for Red Bull setting the seventh and tenth best times.

Toro Rosso racers Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais were ninth and 11th in the interim STR2B. Rubens Barrichello was back in action in the Honda RA108 but again showed little pace as the Brazilian veteran ended the day 12th ahead of Di Grassi.

After missing virtually all of the 2008 running to date, Super Aguri Honda began its scheduled test with Takuma Sato behind the wheel. The Japanese racer was 14th ahead of Tonio Liuzzi and Alex Wurz in the Force India and Honda entries.

Testing continues on Wednesday.

I'm really surprised by the consistency of Williams! The new car really looks good, I hope they can do the same during the regular season.

IMO, Rosberg is as good as Hamilton. Too bad Frank Williams wouldn't release him to move to McLaren. He was on top of Ron Dennis wish list.
That would have been a pairing sure to create a few fire works.

2008 Testing - Webber fastest on day two in Spain

2008 Testing - Webber fastest on day two in Spain
Eurosport - Wed, 13 Feb 23:24:00 2008
Australian driver Mark Webber set the fastest time for Red Bull ahead of Williams drivers Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima on the second of the three-day testing session in Jerez.

More StoriesF1 in racism clampdown
Webber took nearly one-and-a-half seconds off Tuesday's time, clocking 1:18.628 after 72 laps as his Scottish team-mate David Coulthard was forced to retire early after suffering mechanical problems.

Home hero Fernando Alonso achieved the fourth fastest time on his only day of testing behind the wheel of his Renault.

The Spaniard's former McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who led Tuesday's session, was sixth fastest.

Hamilton, who was the recent victim of racist taunts in Barcelona, received a warmer reception from the crowd in southern Spain with many fans travelling from the tiny British overseas territory of Gibraltar, just 100km away.

The Spanish fans' behaviour was seen as a reaction to perceived favouritism by McLaren for Hamilton last season at the expense of Alonso, who has since rejoined Renault.

"The McLaren stable didn't ask us to take any particular security measures for the three days of testing but in any case we never had problems of this type here," Jerez circuit officials said.

Renault's Nelson Piquet also had to cut short his session by an hour after his car caught fire, while Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais could not finish his last lap after running out of petrol.

Kovalainen ups the pace with McLaren

Kovalainen ups the pace with McLaren
Thu 14 Feb, 05:22 PM

Heikki Kovalainen topped the timesheets on the third and final day of testing for the team this week at Jerez. The Finn stopped the clocks in an impressive 1:17.974s, half a second clear of Mark Webber’s Thursday pace.

The McLaren team ran two very different front wheel inserts today as they push on with the development of the MP4-23. Hamilton – fourth fastest - ran inserts which featured a brake cooling inlet positioned to the front edge of the tyre, while Kovalainen ran more traditional carbon devices.

The high winds that affected so many teams in testing yesterday was not a factor today with a majority of the 16 runner able to complete in excess of 100 laps of the 4.428km circuit.

Red Bull showed good pace once again today and this time it was David Coulthard leading the way with a best lap of 1:18.485s, over a tenth quicker than Webber’s record pace yesterday.

Kazuki Nakajima continued his impressive week with Williams Toyota while new recruit Nico Hulkenberg has yet to shine in his role as team test driver and was 14th fastest of the 16 runners.

Robert Kubica continued the recent test trend in out pacing team-mate Nick Heidfeld. The BMW Sauber duo were fifth and ninth fastest respectively as they continue to work on the balance of the F1.08.

Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais recorded the sixth and eighth fastest times with Nelson Piquet in between in his Renault as he put in an impressive 134 laps in the new R28.

Yesterday’s pace setter Mark Webber had to be content with tenth overall today in his RB4 ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella who is showing well in his new role at the Force India Ferrari team.

Jenson Button and Alex Wurz were a distant 12th and 16th for Honda with Anthony Davidson, Hulkenberg and Lucas Di Grassi in between.

It is hard to read too much into testing times and as much as they have dropped over the tests so far this year at this circuit, it is worth noting that in October 2006 a certain Michael Schumacher put in a 1:15.688s lap in his 248F1 Ferrari, just off his 1:15.650s lap recorded back in the V10 era in 2004...

I think that Hamilton is going to have his hands full with Kovalainen this year.

Heikki seems to have the upper hand in testing so far.
