Bahrain test

Bahrain day one - Ferrari one-two in testingFerrari were the early leaders as this week’s Formula One test got underway in Bahrain on Monday. With the majority of squads choosing to attend last weekend’s three-day session at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, Toyota were the only other team in action at the Sakhir track.

Kimi Raikkonen clocked the fastest time of 1m 32.079 with the Italian team’s tester Luca Badoer over a second behind. Raikkonen and Badoer both began a busy technical programme, paying particular attention to the F2008’s set-up and electronics.

Third-placed Timo Glock was the quickest Toyota driver as he carried out mechanical set-up changes. Glock, who completed 72 laps, was joined by the team’s tester Kamui Kobayashi, who enjoyed his first taste of the Japanese squad’s new TF108 and finished in fourth.

Both Ferrari and Toyota will continue to test at the Bahrain track on Tuesday.

Unofficial Monday times from Bahrain:
1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:32.079
2. Luca Badoer, Ferrari, 1:33.323
3. Timo Glock, Toyota, 1:33.418
4. Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota, 1:33.856

Bahrain day two - Raikkonen dominates for Ferrari

Bahrain day two - Raikkonen dominates for Ferrari
Ferrari retained their grip on the Sakhir timesheets on Tuesday, as Kimi Raikkonen again set the pace in testing. Raikkonen’s time of 1m 30.595s put him over 1.5 seconds clear of tester Luca Badoer in the second F2008.

While Badoer concentrated his efforts on evaluating different set-ups in the Italian team’s new challenger, Raikkonen carried out a Grand Prix simulation, which included all three qualifying sections and an entire race distance. The Finn, who completed over 77 laps in total, will continue to drive on Wednesday alongside team mate Felipe Massa.

The only other squad in action were Toyota, who fielded Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli in two TF108s. Despite the perfect testing conditions, the Japanese team found their progress hampered by gearbox issues.

“Our focus today was again on developing the baseline set-up by trying different mechanical solutions but unfortunately we lost a bit of time on both cars due to gearbox issues,” explained Pascal Vasselon, senior general manager chassis. “This was a shame but we have been testing various parts, including the new gearbox, and we will learn from these issues to improve our package before the season starts.”

Both teams will be back in action at the track on Wednesday.

Unofficial Tuesday times from Bahrain:
1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:30.595
2. Luca Badoer, Ferrari, 1:32.230
3. Timo Glock, Toyota, 1:32.889
4. Jarno Trulli, Toyota, 1:33.379

BTW, Fastest race lap in 07 was Massa with 1:34.06

Bahrain day three - Ferrari still on top form

Bahrain day three - Ferrari still on top form
Ferrari maintained their stranglehold on the timesheets in Bahrain as the three-day test session at the Sakhir track concluded on Wednesday. For the third day in a row Kimi Raikkonen was the man to beat, the Finn the only driver to dip below the 1m 31s mark, after clocking a best time of 1m 30.455s.

Raikkonen was joined on track by team mate Felipe Massa, who set the second-fastest time for the Italian squad. The pair compared different set-ups options, as they worked through a programme which focused on the general development of the F2008.

Jarno Trulli was the quickest Toyota driver in third, while team tester Kamui Kobayashi clocked the fourth-fastest time. Trulli and Kobayashi covered over 150 laps, as they gathered data.

“We can be pleased with today’s work, which was mainly focused on mechanical set-up for race conditions,” said Pascal Vasselon, senior general manager chassis. “We wanted to investigate several options and we now have a lot of data to study which will help us. It has been a very useful three days.”

Both squads will remain in Bahrain for another three-day test, which is scheduled to get underway on Saturday.

Unofficial Wednesday times from Bahrain:
1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:30.455
2. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:31.293
3. Jarno Trulli, Toyota, 1:32.145
4. Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota, 1:32.265

2008 Testing - Raikkonen sets searing pace

2008 Testing - Raikkonen sets searing pace
Eurosport - Tue, 05 Feb 17:00:00 2008
World Champion Kimi Raikkonen continued Ferrari's domination of Formula One's Bahrain test by setting a searing pace at the Sakhir circuit for the second day in a row.

Silverstone plans move forward
The 28-year-old Finn, who was running race simulations for most of the day, lapped over two seconds quicker than the pole position time for last year's race in a time of 1:30.595.

He was no doubt helped by conditions that were far less windy than on the opening day, but in spite of that, still looked mightily impressive during the day.

Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer ran a totally different programme, working on general development work, and ended the day 1.7 seconds slower than Raikkonen.

Toyota were in action again, and this time had both their race drivers on hand after Kamui Kobayashi had driven on day one.

It was not a good day for the Japanese-owned team as both Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock suffered gearbox problems and the Italian their fastest driver, some 2.3 seconds off the pace.

"It was a difficult day because we had a problem on the car so unfortunately I spent some time in the garage while this was fixed but that is part of testing," said Trulli.

"Obviously it wasn't ideal but we have more days here where we will work to better understand the balance and behaviour of the car. At the moment we are still in the first stages of our preparation - we have updates and more performance to come."

GP2 champion Timo Glock, who will partner Trulli this season, was fourth quickest as he evaluated some new mechanical parts while the Italian worked on set-up.

The test continues for one more day.

The Ferraries are looking very strong for this year and they'll definatelly be the team to beat! I hope that McLaren can put it together and give them a run for their money!

Early stop for Raikkonen and Massa
Sun 10 Feb, 04:21 PM

As the second three-day schedule of testing at the Bahrain International Circuit continued today, Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa enjoyed clear skies and warm weather as they took to the track.

Today was the fifth and penultimate day of this long week of testing for Ferrari at the Sakhir circuit, but this working Sunday was not the most successful on the reliability front as both drivers had to stop running ahead of schedule prior to the end of their planned programmes.

An oil leak stopped Raikkonen, who was working on car development and set-up testing at the time, while an engine problem interrupted the final part of a race simulation being undertaken by Massa.

Up to that point, the Brazilian had completed 70 laps, the quickest in a time of 1:30.190. The World Champion Finn did 61 laps, with a fastest time of 1:30.015. Despite their interrupted sessions, both Ferrari drivers set times quicker than the Toyota pair also running at Sakhir.

Testing continues at this circuit tomorrow, still with Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa on track.
