Raikkonen sets Jerez pace

Raikkonen sets Jerez pace
Eurosport - Mon, 14 Jan 19:18:00 2008
Ferrari fired an early warning shot to McLaren as Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa set the pace on the opening day of Formula One's first major test of 2008 at Jerez.

World champion Raikkonen completed 59 laps of the former Spanish and European Grand Prix venue behind the wheel of his new Ferrari F2008, which had only previously had one day of running at Fiorano previously.

The 28-year-old Finn's lap of 1:19.846 on a track that started damp, but dried throughout the day, was a shade under three tenths of a second quicker than his Brazilian team-mate Massa, who completed just 42 laps during the day.

McLaren's top runner was Pedro de la Rosa in third place - but he was three quarters of a second slower than Raikkonen.

Apart from an early installation run, de la Rosa only lapped during the afternoon, and sampled a number of new systems on what is still a very new MP4-23 machine.

Fourth and sixth were Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais, who were both using interim versions of Toro Rosso's 2007 machine. They sandwiched the new McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen.

Seventh, also in an interim car, was Williams driver Nico Rosberg, while Jarno Trulli was the busiest man during the day, the Italian completing 84 laps in Toyota's new TF108.

"Everything went smoothly today," said Trulli, who was giving the car it's debut. "We were competitive all day, in the wet and in the dry.

We pushed our performance forward and also gained more experience with this new car, which is very important and we are understanding more and more how it works.

Renault's Nelson Piquet Jr and Red Bull's David Coulthard completed the top ten during the day, while Vitantonio Liuzzi was next up on what was his first day as Force India's official test driver.

Super Aguri's British test driver James Rossiter was the slowest of the 14 drivers present. He managed only ten laps though as the rear axle of his car caught fire.

The test continues for two more days, with British superstar Lewis Hamilton set to run for McLaren on both.
