Bourdais wins Champ-car farewell with a triumph
Sun 11 Nov, 09:52 PM

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Sebastien Bourdais made a triumphant farewell to Champ-car racing here with his eighth victory of the season, capturing the season-ending Grand Prix of Mexico here Sunday.

The Frenchman had already clinched his fourth consecutive season drivers' championship and was simply finishing off his last race before departing for Formula One next year.

Bourdais captured his 31st career Champ-car victory in 73 career starts, finishing on the podium for the 44th time in the series.

"It's unbelievable," Bourdais said as he greeted his pit crew in Victory Lane. "I can never thank these guys enough for everything they have done for me. I was crying like a baby."

Australian Will Power was second with Spain's Oriol Servia third, American Graham Rahal fourth and Canada's Paul Tracy fifth.

Power edged Bourdais for pole position and led until Bourdais passed him for the top spot on lap 23.

The Frenchman pulled away until a full-course caution on lap 55 allowed Power to close behind Bourdais for a restart, but the European star sped away from Power and took the triumph.

"It was nice to get on the podium," Power said. "It was good to finish on a high. It would have been nice to win but Sebastien had enough for me. We will be back next year to fight for the championship."

Bourdais finished with 364 season points to 281 for runner-up Justin Wilson of Britain with Dutch rookie Robert Doornbos on 268 and Power fourth on 262
