McLaren taking time over new driver

McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh says the team are in no rush to replace Fernando Alonso - as they are "dictating the driver transfer market".

McLaren will take their time to search for Alonso's replacement, saying they doubt any drivers will sign for another team while there is a McLaren seat available.
The Woking team announced on Friday that Alonso's contract had been terminated with immediate effect after both parties failed to find a way forward in their relationship.

The decision has left McLaren one driver short for the 2008 F1 season, although Lewis Hamilton has already put forward his suggestions for his new team-mate.

The British driver, who finished runner-up in this year's championship, admitted this weekend that he would like Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil or Heikki Kovalainen as his 2008 partner.

However, McLaren are not yet ready to make that decision, saying they hold the key to the driver market and doubt that any driver would sign for another team before first checking with them.

"In truth I think we're rather dictating the driver transfer market at the moment," Martin Whitmarsh, the team's CEO, told the Guardian.

"Until the second McLaren drive is sorted out I don't think you'll see much movement, so we're not really hurried.

"Obviously there are some drivers who've approached us who are contracted elsewhere and we've had to say we can't talk to them unless they can prove they are free to negotiate."
