Michael may have a contract with Ferrari (and I doubt he will drive for anyone but the Scuderia), but he definitely is not acting as much of an advisor to the team. He has admitted that F1 technology advancement and the set up needs of the current cars is something he is not up to speed (no pun intended) on. His advice is based on a two year old car and is not relevant to today's machine. Additionally, Kimi didn't like it when MS was hanging around the paddock so he was relegated to almost "personna non grata" status. Hence you haven't seen him around an F1 event since the mid first half of the season. He feels like an outsider at the track - with no role to play. He's more a VIP than part of the team. He's probably not happy but I doubt he's unhappy enough to drive for McLaren.

^^^All well said......I am sure Ferrari signed Michael as an advisor just to lock him in so he could not get the itch and drive for a competitor but in F1 stranger things have happened

1 thing that remains...

Next year's cars are totally different and new animals, so to speak.

No traction control, no driver aids, nothing.

Put the him in next years car next to a current driver and I would be more than confident the story would be much different.

Well, he'll get a chance in the '07 car:

(GMM) Michael Schumacher's first formula one test since he retired will be for two full days next week, his spokeswoman and a spokesman for Ferrari separately confirmed on Tuesday.

It is reported that the 38-year-old German, who retired as the Italian team's race driver last year but attended several grands prix in 2007 as an advisor, will drive the championship-winning F2007 at the Barcelona group test next week.

The Ferrari spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that Schumacher will drive on Tuesday - the first day of the initial post-season test period - and also Wednesday.

"It's half for pleasure, half for technical reasons," he added, while Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm explained that the seven time world champion has "big experience" of driving without electronic aids like traction control.

But Kehm told the BBC: "It's probably a one-off. Michael does not intend at all to go back to F1."

WHY IS SCHU REALLY COMING BACK?

Just over a year after ending the most successful F1 career ever, Michael Schumacher will be back in a competitive track environment next week when he tests the F2007 at Barcelona.

Ferrari say the test is part fun, part helpful development work for the team – but why do you think the 38-year-old has decided to dust off his helmet and complete a two-day test?

Does he just fancy a run out? Will it be a one-off? Is he dipping his toe in the water? Or is he bored and even planning a comeback?

And what happens when Shumi goes as fast as Kimi in an 'un-restricted' car?

2nd place...is just the first loser.

Well, we'll soon find out. Perhaps he also wants to prove something to himself?
Whether to act on it or not is another question.
