Brazilian GP - Schumacher praises Raikkonen
Eurosport - Mon, 22 Oct 11:09:00 2007
Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has congratulated Kimi Raikkonen on his world title success.

Ferrari driver Raikkonen won the Brazilian Grand Prix to overturn a seven-point deficit to Britain's Lewis Hamilton and claim the world crown for the first time.

Schumacher, who won the last of his seven world titles for Ferrari in 2004 and retired last year, was delighted that Raikkonen had emerged on top.

"What an incredible finale, what a thrilling finish!" said the 38-year-old German, who also praised Raikkonen's team-mate Felipe Massa.

"I was so, so happy to see Kimi and Felipe leading the way across the finish line.

Raikkonen's turnaround was one of the most remarkable comebacks in Formula One history, as he came back from 17 points behind with two races to go and 26 down at mid-season.

"I've always believed that you should never, ever give up and you should always keep fighting even when there's only a slightest chance.

"Congratulations to Kimi and all our guys - that was a super performance," he added.

Schumacher, who now works as a special advisor to Ferrari's race team, chose to watch the race from his home in Switzerland rather than travel out to Sao Paulo.

"In retrospect, the only unfortunate part is that I wasn't there myself," Schumacher added.

"I would love to have celebrated with them all. But we'll make up for that as soon as possible, and I'm really looking forward to that."

Schumacher retired from racing last year as Formula One's most successful driver, with 91 wins and seven world titles, the last five of which came in successive years with Ferrari from 2000 to 2004.
