McLaren deny rumors of signing Hakkinen for 2007

McLaren denied suggestions that double world champion Mika Hakkinen could be signed to drive alongside Fernando Alonso in 2007.

The British broadsheet Guardian wrote that the 38-year-old Finn was spotted last week at the McLaren factory in the UK.

Hakkinen, who retired from Formula One in 2001 and started to compete in Germany’s DTM series, also attended the Brazilian Grand Prix last month as a guest of McLaren.

McLaren chief executive Martin Whitmarsh said: “Mika has been in the simulator and following his visit to Brazil wished to understand if he could contribute to our programme.”

“We currently have no plans to run Mika alongside Alonso next year. The identity of our second driver will be announced in due course.”

Last week, Whitmarsh confirmed that the second seat would be occupied next year by either Hamilton or Pedro de la Rosa. “I think we’ll announce something before January.”

Mika was one of my favorite Mclaren mercedes drivers ever. He left on a good note being double world champ for 98 & 99 and never dragged on long enough to make himself look silly. I hope he stays out of the hot seat and maybe takes a position with McLaren as a technical advisor or test/ development driver. I would hate to see him tarnish his name with poor performance from McLarens new breed of 2.6 Litre motorcar.
