Ron Dennis announced that Montoya may be recalled for race and test duties on the yahoo F-1 U.K. site. Quote: Montoya remains under McLaren contract. Ron Dennis has vowed to block departed racers J.P. Montoya's immediate MASCAR debut, with the team principal insisting that McLaren reserves the right to put the Columbian back in the F - 1 car. Unfortunately it is thought to be just the opening of negotiations for J.P.'s contract buyout by Chip Genassi. I have a hard time to understand how F-1 can let someone of Montoya's talent go like this.

I am guessing Ron Dennis played normal F1 hardball during contract negotiations and did not expect JPM to have a nice safety net waiting for him and did not expect a big FO from JPM. From what I have seen and read, he has not been happy or treated very well at Williams. I can't tell if it is performance or personality but it has never seemed like a good mix. He always seemed to be a better and happier driver in CART/IRL.

From what I saw at Indy in the paddocks this year, the talent pool is shrinking with lots of rolling chicanes filling the grid. JPM should have had his pick of rides but the politics seem absolutely staggering and starting earlier each year. For him to drive as a lame duck all year had to have worn on him and then Dennis to pull this.

It will be interesting to see how this goes since Dennis and Genassi both are used to getting what they want.

In hindsight he might have been a good fit at Red Bull. As far as Ron Dennis management style goes, my Father used to say: "When you shout asshole into a mountain, never expext darling for an echo."

I'm fairly certain that Montoya took a significant cut in pay to come to NASCAR. Quite a few F1 drivers earn more than it takes to field an entire NASCAR team for a season (about $15 million according to Rick Hendrick). The race season for NASCAR is 36 events I think. For JPM, it's about everything BUT the money.

Never mind that though - Paul Tracy is a washed up hack. He's been in ChampCar for 19 years because that's the only place he can be competitive...it's only really ever served as a feeder series to more prestigious european series'.

I like NASCAR and F1 evenly, for different reasons. NASCAR is like watching an action movie - there's always something going on. You can just turn your brain off and gaze at the cars. Plus, the field is huge. F1 however is the total opposite - the limiting factor in the performance of an F1 car is often (or fundamentally should be) the driver. In NASCAR, the limiting factor is the vehicle - it's intentionally heavy, and the rules laden with restrictions. As touring cars / saloon cars go, they're probably the slowest except for when they go in circles.

In today's AutoWeek magazine, JPM said that he called Ganassi and told him that "he just wanted to RACE again". Implication was that F1 was not that much about racing but more about the qualifying and pit strategies.

I have to say that beyond the cars toward the rear which do pass, there is not much passing on the track in F1 on the tracks that I have been. Some, but not a lot.

Also, projections are that Montoya will be making about $5M a year. Remember that besides the "$15M for the season per car" which is $400K per race just for the CAR and team. The driver will also get extra money for sponsor deals, ownership points, purse, contingencies, souvenirs, etc. So JPM is not going to pull in under $10M the first year.

JPM is really gone. Pedro de la Rosa is handling the second McLaren in France this weekend. Wow, I thought he would at least finish the season.
