45 MPH deer collision in a W123 (1985 300D)

This occurred last Friday night. The impact was at 50 MPH minus however much I slowed down in the course of leaving a skid mark (my right rear wheel locked up) 30 feet long. The deer was a 2-year-old doe, maybe 130 pounds. I was uninjured, barely felt it. Steering was unaffected, the engine continued to run, but the impact popped the top oil cooler line, and there's no cellphone signal out here, so I had to hike three miles home. I'm awaiting word from my insurance company now, whether the car will be repaired or totaled:

Doesn't look all that bad, you should hopefully be able to recover from that.
Hope they come through for you.

Impressive. Other than a Volvo, I would not want to be in any other car than a Benz when hitting something big on a road. Looks like the car will survive.

It looks like you are a lot luckier than I was last Friday night.

Car in front of me hit a deer (12-point buck). The deer was spun around in front of me. At 70 mph, I didn't have much time to do anything. I ended up hitting it with the right side of the car.

At first, I didn't think the damage was too bad, considering that it put me up on two wheels! Just minor body damage. The grille and bumper are cracked, and inner fender is missing.

The next day, I looked it over real good in the daylight. I'm afraid the insurance may just write it off. NONE of the body panels line up anymore. Passenger window doesn't line up quite right. The sunroof will not operate (just a grinding noise and the sound of cables crunching). And the roof is actually wrinkled in a few spots. And, this is just the damage topside. There is also a lot of damage to the undercarriage.

The surprising thing is that it still drives like new. Other than the added wind noise from the sunroof and passenger window, all appears fine with the drivability of the car.

Wow. I wouldn't have guessed you dispatched a deer from that little amount of damage.

Good luck with the repairs.

I'm apprehensive the protection may actually send word to it off. NONE of the form boards line up anymore. Traveler window doesn't line up very right. The sunroof should not work.

Well, no word on the repairs yet. The insurance company denied the initial claim. I am being told that there is no way that the roof damage was caused from this loss. They are not too willing to do anything at this point, even though my agent testified that they inspected the car 2 months ago when the policy was put in place. We submitted pictures and dealer inspection report. Still no luck getting the repairs approved.

I didn't realize that my insurance policy only covered from the front bumper forward!

I would be interested to know the name of your insurance company.
