The early and mid 1990's cars were not bad. Their quality was on a par with Honda or Nissan. Things really went downhill when Daimler acquired Chrysler, and the "Chrysler era" cars are the ones that had the problems. I remember a lot of bad write ups in the consumer magazines about those cars, in particular about electrical gremlins. Somewhere around 2005, quality really started to improve.

Did you ask the owners about the wiring ?

Busted airmatics are a real problem.

... and this important discussion continues.

hello, suggest you owners buy one cheap diagnostic tool yourself.
then if the car has problems, you can find where's the problem, and can do the diagnose yourself.
recommend you esobd2.com website.

The 2002 and newer ML's are true Mercedes with superb quality. The 99 ML was made during the Daimler Chrysler era. Quality was no better than a, well, Chrysler.

Not finding all 2002 and newer ML's to be of "superb quality". 2006 and 2007 ML's for example were not even average quality.

My 21 year old W140 is probably safer than most of the MB built after 2000.

Maybe, a guess at best.

I am still driving the W140 300SE I bought new in 1992. It is a wonderful, comfortable, high quality car..... I'm afraid it has been pretty much downhill from there with the S class, perhaps until very recently.

Similarly my W124 1995 E320 coupe is the last of a breed of excellent E class vehicles without overly complicated electronics, failing airmatic suspensions, SBC (?) braking systems. Quality, simplicity, reliability, moderate repair and maintenance costs.... has M-B forgotten the fundamentals?

Hopefully not. How many miles do you have on the W124 '95 E320 coupe?

I have a W204 2008 C300 sedan, it's very reliable even with 124K miles. No overly complicated electronics, failing airmatic suspensions, SBC braking systems. Quality, solidness, decent power, reasonable gas mileage, moderate repair and maintenance costs...

I would not put all eggs in that basket, a lot have changed in safety, and just because the car crumbles does not mean less safe, try to google fifth gear, they have tested a Volvo 940 (old) vs Renault Modus (new) and even Volvo was state of the art in safety at the build year it got smashed compared to a new smaller car.

Not saying that the quality of the W140 is bad, but years of study is making new car more safe than ever.
