W123 Crash testimonial

I was recently rear ended in my 300D by a 2009 Dodge Charger. I estimated his impact speed was about 25mph. Here are pictures of both cars.



The Charger that hit me:

The 300D was driven away while the Charger had to be towed.

Having a 123, I realize how sturdy they were built, but it got me to thinking....aren't the new cars of today built to "crumple" and absorb an impact? Recently there was a video of a 1959 Chevy vs a modern car - not even a fair fight!

If the new cars are designed to absorb, then it did it's job and protected the passengers. I saw a video of a new Mercedes that crumpled the entire front end - just up to the passenger "cage" which remained in tact.

cars have been designed with crumple zones as far back as the 1950s (cheers to Mercedes and Volvo) and even Alfa Romeo caught on early with the safety cage protected with crumple zones in the 1960s.

But, in the case of the 300D crash, bear in mind what almost always happens in rear impacts; the car that does the rear-ending is almost always braking at the point of impact, so its nose is sunk low to the ground; its 'soft' parts (bonnet, lights, grill) connect with with the other car's 'hard' parts (bumper connected to crunch zones). Which is why the 'attacking' car always comes off worse/looks worse than the car it rear-ends.

I agree, so next time you are about to hit someone, don´t slam your brakes ABC seen on the more expensive Mercedes, helps keep the car on a constant level while braking though

I had a friend that believed it was better not to slam on your brakes if you know the impact is unavoidable.
One night I woke up to watch him brace on the accelerator during a low-speed head-on impact with a limousine. In a 2003 CL55 we drove thru the front of the limo and sheared off the front end of the CL55 without ever tripping the deccelerometer that deploys the airbags. Thus, the laceration to the back of my head against the moonroof.

Disperse energy or have an airbag deploy timely?
I'm doing everything I can for a settlement and design modification.
Otherwise within 2-months I'm going to arrange the crash test of a 2003 CL55 and CL500 to prove my point beyond any question, and then publish the results.
