I will also add that many models in the Benz range have a rev limiter that works when not in drive. ie you can only rev the engine to 4000 rpm so if this is fitted and you put the car in neutral then the engine will die back to a max of 4000rpm.

Now anyone want to be the guinea pig and put the gas to the floor with right foot brake with left foot and try to put the car in neutral?

two things. what, in the name of all that's holy, does the stop/start button give us that a key doesn't? What does it advance in terms of safety, over status: 'oooh, look, i've got a push start button'. Ah, jolly good. Good for you.

Second, i've yet to see this type of crash in mainland europe - or indeed any land outside of the usa.

At what point during the car's epic acceleration did the driver realise he was out of control? What was he doing getting to 120mph before it went t1ts up?

Quoted from the following article in Yahoo,
AP NewsBreak: Toyota to replace 3.8M gas pedals - Yahoo! News

Quote:
WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor Corp. will replace gas pedals on 3.8 million recalled vehicles in the United States to address problems with sudden acceleration or the pedal becoming stuck in the floor mat, The Associated Press has learned.
As a temporary step, Toyota will have dealers shorten the length of the gas pedals beginning in January while the company develops replacement pedals for their vehicles, the Transportation Department said in a statement provided to the AP. New pedals will be available beginning in April, and some vehicles will have brake override systems installed as a precaution.
This article seems to confirm the earlier statement that (some) Toyota DBW (drive by wire throttle) does not have the "brake override" thus the plan of the brake override installation as one of the corrective measures.

YES with this statement "and some vehicles will have brake override systems installed as a precaution" they are admitting fault.

It is NOT a pedal stuck on the carpet situation, which is bad enough in itself but they try to cover up the real problem. In this short statement they have gone from blaming the carpet/pedal to sweeping the situation under the carpet

LA Times 11/29/09: Data points to Toyota throttle

Data point to Toyota's throttles, not floor mats -- latimes.com

Getting more interesting!

Ironically the NHTSA did several investigations regarding Toyota unintended accelerations and found nothing but possible floor mats entrapment. Sounds familiar?? Just like the SEC did several investigations on Bernard Madoff investments after multiple complaints and found nothing until the final meltdown . . . . .
