About 25 years ago my Dad and I replaced the gearbox in a Ford Falcon sedan using ramps at the front and 4 ton jack stands at the rear supporting the chassis.

The ramps were the kind that were made of welded angle iron. To ensure the car couldn't possibly roll back of the ramps, Dad fabricated some vertical plates for each side which slid down behind the wheel like a wedge, locking it in place once it was run up to the top of the ramp.

We also had the "Justin" block, which was a solid piece of hardwood with a base of 400x400mm and 300mm high, that was always under the car just in case it ever somehow came off the stands. It never did.

Fortunately now I have a 4 post hoist.
