I wonder which one is the overall safest one, my guess is the new S class, but also i reckon the GL would stand up pretty well, atleast in an head to head accident? Any thoughts?

The GL may be the safer of the two to crash in, but the S is less likely to get into a crash in the first place (not being a high riding truck).

Also the GL having a higher riding is safer from side-impact perspective, isn't it?
specially if it is side-impacted by another suv? The SUV's bumper will hit directly at the S class' side window (closer to passenger's / driver's head)

I guess, but the structure of the S class is far stiffer I believe

and Mercedes probably put down a lot more money developing the safety consept of the S class

the S class have cutting places for the firedepartment, the GL dont

Trucks flip over often in crashes, which is by definition less safe; I have a photo of a ML that was T-boned by a smart fortwo in Germany....the ML is on its side, the smart on all 4.
