BTW Marsden, interesting photo there. Any info you can share on the car? Brabus Monoblock V's? Early AMG front air dam? Just curious.
One of a series of photos I've had just about forever. I think the car was a gussied up 126 from back when they were the conveyance of choice for Japanese captains of industry. I believe they even preferred LHD as an additional status marker.

Marsden,

Thanks for the additional photo. The multi-piece Brabus has been one of my favorites. Appears that the car has side and rear curtins, and slightly lowered.

Very nice looking, classic style.

Cheers !!

Two things here: 1. to avoid accidents 2. to survive accidents.

Avoid accidents:
Modern day electronics to control braking systems, to control speeds that exceed limits of the car, to avoid collisions...

Survive accidents:
To absorb impact by allowing the car to crush around the occupants, and cocooning / isolating the occupants in an accident with air bags...I believe that is the main design goal of MB cars.

When you consider these two elements, I would think the top end MB would be the safest of all MB.

BTW: of course, I would like to think my W140 is the safest...and it is safe...but not realistically the safest when you consider where we are today in technology. The weight of the W140 is mostly for riding comfort (i.e. sprung weight ratio to unsprung weight ... that's why cars like Rolls Royces and Bendley's are heavy cars...mainly for driving comfort).

This has been said for a long time -- "a car is only as safe as the nut behind the wheel".

I believe that the W140 is a safe car but a lot has changed in structures and different steels to absorb the different forces that occur during a crash.
There are not much differences. The W140 is almost as strong as the W221, but with less airbags and electronics.

In a frontal Crash a W126 is stille more stable then most compact and middle class cars nowadays. Its weaks spots are the sides.

i would say the W221 is the most safe mercedes today, followed by the W140 (not the W220!)

To the smaller cars, a W124 with airbags is still good in the game. All E-Class after that also.

Actually the W220 is SIGNIFICANTLY safer than the W140 and it doesn't even come close to the W221.
Here is the W140:
And here is the W220 crashing at around 20 kph quicker than the W140:
Plus keep in mind the W140 doesn't have curtain airbags which means in side is significantly less safe.

I dont see a difference in the offset crash.

In the field the W220 still crashes mostly safe for the passengers, but its nearly always totaled, you can guess why.

The 2 ONLY cars i think are tank worthy material
2002 g55 or g500 461 body style
1992-1999 sclass w140 body
Who ever hits one of these cars in a severe wreck, i wish him/her a speedy recovery and consider there car totaled.
