I cannot believe MB would engineer a part so integral to the safety of the driver and occupants that way.

Does this affect the 2002 C?

God I hope not.

Wow! Im going to check mine A.S.A.P. You would think they would make it out of solid steel but stamped sheet metal!?! Is there a replacement part that is made from solid steel?

How long could we disregard the timing of the inspection before we would be considered negligent ourselves?

Bottom line, if this maintenance item is not specficically called out as requiring a certain periodic inspection then it is a design issue. I.e., it was not designed to be maintained. All cars come with recommended/required periodic inspections and maintenance and if the purchaser is not put on notice of it then it is not their fault.
This is absolutely spot on. If it wasn't included in the requirements, it is a design problem. I could go on and on about how you are absolutely correct.

I had a very very similar experience.

I had a very life changing experience recently. Whist travelling with my young family at highway speed, my front passenger wheel strarted to make a squeeking sound. On examination (I stopped as soon as I could and thank god I did) the OEM Brabus Monoblock was completely cracked from front to back, all the way through on 4 legs and the 5th leg was holding it together with less than an inch of solid uncracked metal. This could have wiped my family and me out completely, absolutely shocking. Im never buying Mercedes again. I have attached the pics to illustrate just how bad the cracks were. These rims are genuine OEM and not reps. I triple check everything now.

P.S. Car always driven carefully, had no accidents, no pot hole damage etc etc.

Glad to hear that you caught this before anyone was injured or worse.

However, those are not Original Mercedes Benz Wheels.

How can you blame Mercedes for another manufacturer's defective part?

Lucky, very lucky. If that wheel had come off it would have definately been a fatal collosion of some sort. As for OEM I was under the impression that items made by approved tuners such as Brabus were quality tested to the highest of standards before Mercedes put their name anywere near it. Regards

But it is not a Mercedes Benz Manufactured part.

It is designed and manufactured by a 3rd party. Your beef is with Brabus not Mercedes Benz.

I would threaten Brabus with a lawsuit and settle out of court for the cost to replace all 4 of those wheels with the wheels of your choosing and not necessarily Brabus wheels.

I don't think I would ever purchase a set of wheels made by Brabus based on your experience.

What happened to you is simply inexcusable.

I think they need to address this publicly. This is very bad stuff.

Hi Mark, I absolutely understand where your comming from. Its just in my head that a brand that is so well established would not produce such dangerously flawed parts. Honestly, if I had not stopped as quickly as I did, I am 100% certain that me and my family plus other drivers and even pedestrians could have been seriously hurt. Can you imagine being hit by a wheel comming at you approx 60mph, theres no chance you would survive such circumstances. I still have the wheel in my possesion. I showed it to some wheel shops who repair really really badly damaged wheels, and they were ALL shocked as to see this wheel. One of the guys whos been in the wheel business for 30years said he had seen nothing like it, ever. The rim is absolutely intact, no buckling, damage, kerbing etc, yet the centre has completely cracked away from the main lugs holding the wheel to the car. Imagine losing a wheel at 70mph.
