My car was sandwitched in between that and a minivan. The car was completely destroyed in the crumple zones and the passenger compartment was fine; all four doors still latched correctly. Both me and my passenger were uninjured. If I was in a Japanese or American car of the same year I would probably be dead. I will never own anything other than a German car again.
My son smashed our 1985 230E-Parked it at 70 kph onto the back of a VW bug-Both cars total write-off.My son only got minor scratches and shock. Benz took huge impact as Vw stopped dead in front to make turn.I would have repaiered the Benz but right front rail was pushed back around 8mm into firewall. All four doors still opened. He now drives a 1982 230e with the 85 mechanicals rebuilt into it.It has done around 270,000k.

The VW bug is no match for a Merc. Your son was lucky.
And may I suggest driving lessons before you put him into
another tank.

The reason he was driving in a (so called tank) is because they are one of the safest-Why put your kids in anything else. Our son drives brisbane traffic every week and has for last 3 years, averaging around 35,000k annually.Well,he has just written off my 1982 rebuilt 230e-Not his fault-A loaded 'B' double tipper pulled to the left at 60-65kph and took the drivers side of the car from front to back and spun him up the road in doughnuts.Amazingly-car still drives well-slight vibration in tyres but does not look very pretty now.Damage is over $4000.Truckie admitted blame. At least you stand a better than average chance of walking away with a benz. His next car will be another 230e.

Rolled at 85mph without a scratch on me

I am alive to testify that Mercedes really are engineered like no other car in the world. I was driving my European Delivery E320 CDI car in Poland in 2005 when I was faced with 2 oncoming cars. A Mercedes sprinter decided to pass a VW Golf and pulled directly in front of me. I had no choice but to ditch the car. I was partially to blame becasue I was driving to fast. I was probably going 95mph. I had some time to hit the brakes and slowed to 80-85mph. The car went into the ditch on the passenger side, then the front caught and the car topled front to back landed on the passenger side and slid for several feet until it hit a small bridge. People ran to my aid thinking that I was surely dead or severely injured. I emerged without a scratch on me. Needless to say the car never got shipped back to the states and Mercedes provided me with a new car. If anybody is looking for a safe car, look no further. THANK YOU MERCEDES!!

exactly, because if it was from the rear, your head will shift foward with the force. If the airbags deployed, your face would hit the airbags at such a force that it would kill you.

Somewhere near the beginning of the thread, somebody said they were hit head on and the airbags never went off. If the Mercedes wasn't rolling fast enough, the airbags will not go off, same as if the car is not hit dead straight.

Mercedes is very safe and the W140 S-class is one of the safest. This car is built like a tank and was made (mine is a 1994) when Mercedes really put the quality into the Cars. Air Bags or not I would feel much safer in this car then most out there. The glass is about 1 inch thick on this car w140 and the doors are Vacum doors for safety.

People say Volvo is the safest, I have to say Mercedes is one of the safest out there at any price.

the steel they use is called Boran steel which is one of the strongest in the world as far as steel goe's.
