Unhappy Loan out your CLK and get it back like this.......

After this crash I would have thought a hose would be needed but the driver apparently ran away

I wonder if he used the door to get out?

Car severed in bridge smash

How the driver walked away from the Mercedes that almost disintegrated after smashing on the Harbour Bridge in the early hours today police do not know.

But he did. And they have yet to find him to ask him what happened.

The car, a 2005 Mercedes Kompressor, smashed into a concrete median strip dividing north and south-bound lanes on the bridge while travelling south about 3.30am, police said.

It then slid 24 metres before crashing into a concrete barrier, which caused the engine to be flung out of the car.

The headlight assembly of the car was also found about 50 metres from the point of impact, police said.

But when police arrived the car had been abandoned, and despite speaking to the owner of the car have yet to locate the person the owner says he lent it to.

"We checked with the owner who indicated that a person was supposed to have the vehicle, and we're looking for that person at the moment,'' Inspector Terry Gilchrist from The Rocks police said this afternoon.

While saying the cause of the accident was still unknown, the scene of the accident suggested speed may have been a factor.

"There's damage spread far and wide which indicates that speed may well be an issue.''

Inspector Gilchrist also said the driver was extremely lucky to have been able to walk away from the accident.

"I would say he's been extremely lucky, looking at the car ... how you walk away from that I'll never know,'' he said.

The accident was not captured on the Bridge's security cameras, he said, and police were still speaking to hospitals in a bid to locate the driver.

Anyone with information about the accident can contact The Rocks police on 8220 6399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

That's amazing...

That the driver not only was able to get out of the car on his own, but that he had the strength to fling the headlight assembly 50 yards down the road...

Thanks for the post, definitely a tribute to Mercedes' ability to protect occupants.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
