The wheels (which could have been put on a W220) and the wheel arcs are the most obvious indications of a W221, not too many other parts in a condition allowing identification.
The roof must have been taken off after the accident. The front seats seem to have hardly any room, at the rear one could have had a chance with seat belts.

There are special places to cut a W221 to open it up. You can see that rescue services cut the door locks and pillars to open the car up.
The speed must have been very high.

The rear wheel arch is the easy way to identify it. Yes the 221 wheels will fit a 220 b ut the rear wheel arches are completely different.

And there are no body stripes. The W220 has bump strips.

Just had another look at the photo and yes your correct, I did not see that at first look as I was simply horrified at the extent of the damage and look how close the drivers seat is to the steering wheel
This must have been a completly solid object that the car struck and at full wack.

That is a W221. You can tell from the large rear wheel arch. The driver must've been driving real fast. The S350L belonged to a limousine service company.

Judging by the look of a lot of these photos in the forum they are taken after the fireman has cut the car to pieces with his hydraulic cutters.
