Hi guys, I've pretty much grown up with MBs since my parents are longtime customers of the brand, however I didn't really appreciate my mom's choice of car (a 1979 240D diesel) until we slammed into a street lamp at 25mph in it (I was 12 at the time).
Basically, the car climbed up onto the sidewalk and hit a lamp post head-on, right in the middle of the grill. The thing is that when it happened, I couldn't believe it, since I was alive after the impact and could see clearly. However, I had some chest pain due to the seatbelt pretensioner. Sadly, the car's front end was totalled, and the local Mercedes sevice shop decided to use it as a parts donor.
Both of us were physically unscathed, but my mom was quite distressed over the loss of her beloved 240D (she had it for 20 years, and it was metallic green with a manual transmission too). Of course, I was happy to be alive, but like the little kid I was, I was also happy, since I expected my mom to get a car that I liked (at the time, that meant an E39 M5). However, my mom decided to buy another W123, this time it was a 300D Turbodiesel that the garage had given her as a temporary car to use while they evaluated the damage to my mom's 240D.
In retrospect, from the perspective of an 18-y/o, I kind of miss that car. After all, even though it was rather slow, I have fond memories of throwing up in it, and most importantly, it saved my life, without airbags.
Then again, considering how sturdy the W123 is, it's not surprising that one of them saved my life.

Oh, everybody who gets drunk throws up in Taxis, and that is what the W123 diesels were in Europe, for many years, so no worries.

Well, the car posted by Merc_afficionado isn't my mom's, but the damage is quite similar. Hers was a much lighter shade of metallic green, didn't have a trailer hitch, and had its hubcaps at the time of the accident. However, the damage is quite similar to what my mom's old car (she affectionately called it "Helmut") sustained.

Funny thing is, I have never been drunk in my life
Speaking of carsickness, the reason my mom went for a green interior is because-get this-she thought the normal beige color was the same color as vomit when she was at the showroom way back when so she got a car with a green interior, and when I came along, I threw up all over her car's non-vomit colored interior.
